Old time scent control.

I don't buy commercial products.
I wash my hunting clothes in baking soda then they go into a bag with bruised spruce bows.
I make tea out of local odoriferous plants [here in Sk Artemisia cana (Sagebrush) works well] and use it in a spray bottle for cover scent.
I wear rubber boots when stand hunting to help with ground scent on my way in.
Apple slices to eat on stand for breath scent control.
And no cabbage or chili for 2 days prior... :)

That is exactly what I'm saying. Wind is your scent control.
 
I heard hunters eat apples before the day starts. Not sure if this helps or not.

I like apples anyways so Ive been doing it for all 2 of my hunts.

This...You will never fool a member of the animal kingdom with scent control.

There are a few things that can reduce your scent.

I keep all my hunting clothes in an old garment bag. Which i put a couple of bags of wild mint, and black composted soil and leaves from forest floor. I also wear gloves and full camo face mask. Most of your scent comes from exposed skin.

You will never fully eliminate your scent but eliminate it as much as possible will sometimes buy you a little more time or distance.

As always though....hunt with the wind in your face.

Certain Camo patterns will hide your 3D silohette...others are just bunk.

I like Predator and ASAT because of contrast and ability to break up your profile.

As always though movement is what really catches animals attention.

Oh you have my scent to a Tee!! cept some Scotch which I proberly dribbled down my beard the night before!

I got stuck into my friend last weekend, He rocks up Smelling like Fabio, Rexona head to toe... and he is a Season Hunter---heres the catch..

He aint shot a STAG for geez, 2-3 or more Years now after Hunting with me for the past 2 years we have been in some AWESOME country and Surrounded by Deer, he will come back to Camp with 20 Sambar deer photos and Videos from a 5 hour morning hunt....with possibly only a Tale of a stag running away with some hinds... but he can film hinds all day long!

WTH!

So, next I see a Tub of Salt in the front of the ute!!!! WTH!!!!
then he is eating Bananas in camp..... and even on the Boat to camp!!! WTH

I ask him if he want to take up smoking..... he quit some years ago now perhaps 10 or more!

I tell him the way to a Deers heart is to get as rank as you can and shoot as straight as you can! (rank=smell)

I do not wash my hunting clothes LOL I do not use Scents... I do not use Deoderant day to day :D :D but I whale a lot of Deer !


I believe there is more about the Little things on the hunt as opposed to the obvious things.....
like for example, it matters not if its a 150gr or 170gr .30wcf round, it don't matter if you wear Orange or Blue head to toe, it don't matter if you wear Sitka gear or Stoney Creek or ? Cabelas camo.... it matters not if you have a Camera or not on you (sometimes)
What does matter is HOW you go about that darn hunt, Don't You decide where to hunt in your area, Let the Weather Decide for You.... let the Wind dictate your hunt not the Google earth.....


PS- I'm a little excited, I'm off hunting in the morning with a non hunter who likes the hike..... he wont be wearing Camo, or holding a rifle......im yet to decide if its the 1980s 375BB or the 2010s KM84...... the olden days is callin I think!

You're right when Stalking you cant Always hunt with the wind, this is what I call Fair chase...............

sure you head up the gulley in the morning with thermal falling, it slowly rises and once the day is going the wind can begin swirling... at some stages of your hunt you will be winning, during this stage you may quickly lose a bit of ground to wind... in our woods that would be indicated by a HONK some meters/hundred meters up infront of us or beside us as the animal catches our wind... Perhaps just a mad dash further into cover- tell tale sambar bevahiour...

if you hunt small acreage or small woods, it might be difficult to suddenly head off in another direction until you reach a spur or ridge an can work out another plan...
 
Popped at 7 yards, was sitting under a tree just off the trail I figured she'd come down. Couldn't use the stand 'cause the wind was wrong. I don't really do anything other than use scent free products for laundry and showering. She never knew I was there.

I'll go against the grain on wind. I cannot remember ever playing the wind while big game hunting, well, maybe if I bow hunted. Plaid, you bet ya!

I was pondering that perhaps if I showerd first, used spruce boughs to scrub and then humtef in the nude would be effective.
 
I have spent tons of money in the past trying scent eliminator sprays, scent wafers, etc. I have found I kill just as many animals without it -- bad wind busts me either way.
