who makes cowboy era revolvers and such. which are good, which are not? which might be considered the best for the money? anybody make a good top break style?

I recently bought a Pietta "thunderer' in .45 Colt from Marstar and am very impressed with both the gun and the vendor. At the time I did a small write up on the guns performance as I was very impressed...they have many diff. repro. models...check out their website!

Both of my top breaks are Uberti. a New Model Russian in 44 Russian and a Schofield. Awesome guns, not SAA's and enjoyable to shoot, especially for those stages where a reload off the body is required. ;)

Ditto on the new Ruger Vaquero, but still new on the market, so $$ with few used ones coming up.
If $$ is an issue, the older RV is an excellent choice.

I am a SA and 45 Colt fan's,I shoot these revolvers in SASS and Cowboy Mounted Shooting,I own original 45 Colt Army mfg in 1896,Ruger vaquero and New Vaquero,2 original Remington 1858 cap and ball that I shoot regularily and one original Remington 1858 in 44 Colt, one Pietta Thunderer, one Colt Dragoon 3rd generation Signature,2 uberti replica of Remington 1875,one Uberti Schofield 1rst model, one Uberti Schofield Russian in 45 Colt, one Beretta Larami ,the revolvers that I prefer are the Uberti replica's,these guns are so well made and parts are interchangable with the originals,I maintain my Remingtons with Uberti parts,it need ajustment but parts are available from VTI next day with UPS,the original parts are stored. The most accurate is the Uberti S&W schofield No3 first model,I load in this sixgun 7.9 gr of unique with win.primer behind 255 grs pure lead bullet cast from mold manuf.by NEI lubricated with Lyman Orange lube heated,at 20 meters, this load make a 3/4 inches group 10 bullets. The revolvers that I had trouble with are Pietta, the last one that I bought, was a Peacemaker copy in stainless, the front sight fell off,the screw that retain the ejector rod was stripped,I did not even shoot the gun,I returned the gun to the distributors.
The thunderer that I own looks ok, the Beretta Larami is a copy of a Schofield
2nd model with Russian model grip, this gun is manufactured by Uberti and lazer marked by Beretta, the markings are not very nice,it does'nt match with the era compared to the marking of Uberti, that looks original,
the russian model is even marked in russian on the barrel top.The Ruger Vaquero in 45 Colt is a tank, you can load the 44 mag velocities in that revolver with no problem it is too heavy for mounted shooting,I encountered cylinder binding problem with the Ruger new Vaquero, and like all Ruger firearms,I don't like all these warnings engraved on the barrel,I feel like reading the warning before using a VTT or a snowmobile.

I use 777 FF in my muzzle loader Lyman deerstalker 50 cal,and I started to use it in my 45-70,works great, velocity is about the same as with the RS with no fouling, you can shoot all day,I use SPG lubrican in the 45-70 and lyman black powder lubrican in the muzzle loader.I do Cowboy mounted shooting, 45 Colt blank are the ammunition used in this discipline,in the past I was using the Hodgdon RS and P,after 20 to 30 rounds in a wheelgun the cylinders was binding you always have to carry with you a can of" moisture displacer"since I use the 777,no more cylinder binding and the fun of 777,you can leave your gun in the case and clean it during the week, that's something that you can't do with black powder or hodgdon RS or P. I've tried "Clear Shot" from Goex, you pay on the velocity, and for blank loading, not enough power to blow the balloon.

Ruger Vaquero, all the way! I fired 20,000 rds through one of mine before the transfer bar broke. It was a $10.00 part that took 20 minutes to replace.
