I found that I have a few boxes of old Winchester silvertip bullets. 22 cal 48 gr (ptd soft point), 30 cal 180gr and 375 cal 300gr. These are the copper jacket bullets with big silver tip on them that takes up a good portion of the ogive. Likely 70's plus or minus 10 years.

I could load the bullets in the following:

22 cal (48gr pointed soft point)
222, 222 mag and 22-250

30 cal silver tip
30-06, 300 H&H, 300 win mag

375 cal silver tip
375 H&H

How is their performance on targets and game?

I've used them on moose several times with excellent results in a 338 Win Mag. In fact I still have a hundred or so if anyone wants them as I no longer have a 338. I've also used them in 30-06 as a factory load for deer with fine results.

22 silvertips bullets

I wasn’t planning on selling. Sorry. Could possibly trade though? I’ll send a few pics in any event.

The silvertips are a decent bullet, they tended to kill well. That was because expansion is fairly quick by today's standards. The Power Point was actually a little stronger bullet than a Silvertip.

I killed a moose @20 yards quartering away.
It was a 180 gr silvertip like you 've mentionned.
Out of my 308 @2550fps .
Traveled 20" and stopped in the hide on opposite side. Nice mushroom. Kept 1/2 it's weight.

The old Silvertips were a fairly quick opening bullet because there is a lot of lead exposed underneath that paper thin aluminum ‘silver’ cap. They are basically a big soft nosed bullet with a thin protective cap covering the lead to prevent magazine and handling damage. They perform well at standard velocities in calibers like .30-30, .308 and in the heavier weights in .30-06. They are a bit fragile for magnum velocities, especially at closer range. No experience with them in .22 or .375.

One of the favorites at our deer camp years ago some guys still using them :)
Cheers

Yes sir. Used this in 150 gran RN for the 30-30 Winchester. Hit a big buck in the chest cavity and the internal damage was quite outstanding. Within the first few inches of entry that cavity, the frontal pieces of lead mushroomed/pulverized like a little grenade going off.
Deer fell right there and died forthwith.

My prior experience deer harvesting, archery, 308 and 30-06. I was kind of in awe of old Silvertip performance for this WT buck.

I shot a fair number of deer and moose in the early years with that old-style Silvertip
Mostly, I shot the 180 from a 30-06. They always did a good job at those speeds.
I have several I recovered from dead animals in my collection.

I would not trust them at 300 Magnum Velocities, however. I believe they are just
a bit fragile at the higher speeds. Maybe the 220 grain Silvertip would be OK, though.

The 170 grain Silvertip in the 30-30 was very reliable, in my experience. Dave.
