Found these in the back of the cabinet and wondered what anyone might know about them. The plastic pellet in the bullet tip - sales gimmick or practical development?

back of a different box of same vintage:

The following pictures are just for interest as they are an obsolete caliber with semi-jacketed projectiles so as projectiles go, not uncommon.

same caliber, more modern (1980s) special production:

Sabre tips! I put a box of those through my .32 W-Spl years ago. Worked fine, just a plastic cap effectively creating a hollow point rifle round, I believe the core is lead. I still have the brass somewhere. (I save all of my .32 brass, never know when it will disappear from the shelves)

The old man swore by sabre tips for his 270. He still calls every plastic tipped bullet out there by the same name. It did keep the tip from deforming on the feed ramp, and the deer stayed dead, so I guess it wasn't all gimmick. I think we fired the last couple he had a few years back along with some other random Dominion rounds to get the brass.
Never seen a round nose sabre tip before though.

I have about 30 of those 30-30, 170 grain Sabretips as reloading components.

They were a Kling-Kor soft point, with the lead tip replaced by that plastic insert

In other ammo, they were pointed, not unlike a Ballistic Tip, but many years earlier.

Dave.

I don't think either of the two 30-30 boxes are full, or in great shape so limited collector value: I wondered if the plastic BB in the bullet acted much like the plastic tip of a V-MAX (except less expansion). It's nice to know that this early plastic tip design wasn't a sales gimmick.

The 32-40 boxes are all full and I have a few of the Duke specials, and the couple old Imperial boxes I picked up at a gun show last year for a market price.

They have the plastic tip on the end to prevent them from going off in the mag. most 3030 rifles use a tubular magazine so it is'nt a good practice to use pointed ammo in those type of mags. from what I have heard pointed ammo can go off when the rifle recoils. I have one or two of those rounds and I'm just hanging onto them for collector reasons. just like old paper shotgun shells. from the past. neat stuff .

I had some of the old Imperal 308 saber tip ammo many years ago and they did a nice job on a 5 gallon jug full of water. I would just hang onto them for a keep sake . or sell them if you want .
