Which model? Savage has made a few different rifles in this caliber. - dan
Savage products are generally good, but as dan belisle said, there are different models. No can comment usefully on particulars without knowing which one you are talking about.
When deciding to buy an old gun, how that very one has been used and maintained may be more important than particulars of the design.

Get a serial number from him.
If it starts with a letter then it could be anywhere from the 60's, 70's, 80's etc...etc... but if it doesn't start with a letter and is serial numbered with just numbers it will be a real early one, those are the ones I hunt for.
