Older Remington 700

bdl

I purchased this gun as is, it is a Remington 700 BDL varmint 308 built in 1980 it has a
Leupold Var-X III 3.5x10x40 scope with target knobs with Leupold rings and bases, I did confirmed with Leupold it is an early tactical model again 1980 vintage. The only info on the stock is on the butt pad " Uncle Mikes". The rifle has been fitted with a timney trigger, and oversize bolt knob.

My question as package how would it rate, compared to a current 700 and a comparable Leupold?

And has it stands how would it be rated out of a score of 10?

I would think the barreled action is likely built to a better standard and likely saw someone's hands on it during final fitting/assembly as Rem definitely did a better job on their guns back then especially with the BDL's.

The stock is certainly a nice piece and again was likely assmebled with care at the factory. The only downside to it would be it's potential to absorb moisture and it's weight. Depending on how it was sealed/painted it may now be much more resistant to moisture than its original finish.

If the rd count is low and the bore has been taken care of it should be a great shooter and very likely superior to some of the tactical/sps versions currently made.

The twist rate of these guns may not be fast enough for the heavier bullets now widely available for the caliber as these were made purely as a varmint paper puncher so it likely prefers light pills.

Thats my 2c worth.....nice gun!

BTW My late model tactical 700 223 came with a rough bolt, lugs that were barely touching on one side and sloppy headspace....to give you an idea of what I mean.

That's not the original stock. It looks like a B&C or maybe even an HS.
The barreled action will be way better than a current production 700.
Can't comment on the scope but I'll bet it's plenty good.

How does it shoot?

The vast majority of 700 heavy barrel 700's shoot very well regardless of production age.

I have trued old actions and new actions. I have seen old actions quite far out of whack as well as new actions. I have seen new actions quite true as well as old actions.

The one consistent thing I have observed is that with old or newer 700 actions you do not know how 'good' the action is until you take the barrel off and set up and true it.

The stock is not orginal it came with the orginal wood stock, this stock has no markings. I have not shot it for grouping it will hit a 300 yard 10 inch plate everytime for fun

Looks good to me. I am still shooting my 20 ish year old police with a ton of rounds down the tube. Still shoots good. When I bought it I was looking at that exact scope. Very nice glass. Barrel is 1 in 10 twist which I prefer over the 1 in 12. Personal preference.
44.5 grains of BLC2 and Hornady 168 grain match bullets always produced in the 1/2" @100 yards range.
Is this gun any good? Shoot some groups and you'l find out!!!
Best of luck.

I have had exceptionally good luck with one of the new 700 sps tacs; however this I'm sure is more the exception to the rule nowadays. Remington's quality control has been questionable as of late. Yes I'm am told by my local shop owners there has been some issues.

That said if the glass is still bright and clear whats not to love 9 out 10.
