Older Remington 760 in 270 barrel shorten

Hi guys & gals, I purchased an older Remington 760 in 270 and want to shorten the barrel from the standard 22" barrel to 18 1/2" carbine for using to hunt moose as an out of the truck hunter. I'm not worried about losing velocity, as my shots would be under 150 yds. My concern would be screwing up the accuracy of the rifle. I know that their accuracy isn't that great but I wouldn't want it to get any worst. Has anyone done this with their rifles, and what did you find with your experience. The barrel would be professionally cut off and recrowned, of course.

You say the accuracy isn't that great. It would be interesting to know what accuracy you expect. I shot two of them for years. The ..223 would shoot under an inch on demand. The .270 shot around one to one and a quarter inch groups throughout its life with me. Either you can't shoot or the gun you are working with is worn out. With a proper shortening and recrowning its basic accuracy should not be affected.

I question why an "out of the truck hunter" would want to bother with shortening a barrel?..... If you aren't hiking through the woods with it, I would leave it as is......

Even if you were, 22" is not an overly long barrel anyways.....
 
As OntJim said, if the barrel is cut and recrowned properly it should not affect the accuracy. I have done this 2 before, once with a Rem semi as well as a pump and accuracy was not affected within the ranges I was shooting (100-150 yrds)

I did cut a barrel back on the same model rifle as you have. It was brand new and shot just fine scoped with the standard 22 inch barrel.
The reason I had at the time was that I liked the idea of a shorter barrel for the thick woods whitetail hunting I do.
My rifle was a 308 and I went to 19 inches.......The rifle was slightly more accurate(smaller group size) after the surgery. Eagle Eye and Boomer on here will be able to explain how/why this slight accuracy improvement happens sometimes.
For a 270, however, I know from personal experience that anything shorter than 20 inches will not be much fun to shoot(excess muzzle blast).
 
^^^ I did the exact same thing as Pete G., have killed truckloads of whitetail deer with the rifle. Shoots an inch or a little more, works great for central Ontario bush hunting. WK
 
A fellow brought me a 760 barrel in 270 that had been cut and was having major issues with accuracy after that was done.
I recrowned it and by all reports, it's shooting extremely well now.

I've owned lots of 760s over the years. My one long term keeper is a family gun 308 Carbine with 18.5" bbl. I've had a couple cut down to 20" and find it the best length overall for handling. For moose, I'd load it with 150 or 160gr Partitions and never look back.

You might find accuracy improve with a new crown and shorter length.
