Older Remington Fieldmaster 572 serial number??

Do older Fieldmasters not have serial numbers? I pinned down the year of manufacture as 1956. Couldn't find a serial number.
 
I think that the older ones have only a couple of letters that tell the year. I have a brand new 572 it had a serial number. If you e mail them they are very helpfull. They gave me the year of my shotgun
 
Federal law in the States did not require serial numbers until 1969 IIRC. Manufacturers only put serial numbers on "top tier" guns in their line. So cheaper stuff got nothing. Sometimes this is the only way to date stuff....knowing it is pre 1969. Course you know the year.

Love my Fieldmaster, one of the never sells for me.
