Olympic Arms K9GL Photos/Now with a Review

i am considering the 40gl. it should function the same reguardless of length. there is no gas system, just a blowback. i'd chop it to the front sight, ~10inches. just get some 32round mags for when i go south and use the 10s here.

What about getting a second upper and retaining one with a 16" barrel for roadtrips to the US?

I suppose 10 or 17 round G17 mags still aren't as much firepower as a 30 round 223 mag down south, although I understand there are 33 round mags for the G17 .....

Thanks for the report and pictures NaOH, I have a 40GL on order. First thing I'm gonna do is hack it down to 8". Anyone know of an aftermarket FH that will work with it?

Dave

I plan on chopping my barrel as well. Probably 10.5".

Length should make zero difference on function as it's a straight blowback.

I haven't shot mine yet but having owned this and a Storm (which I liked) I'd take this one.

Thanks for the pics. In the promo pics presented by oly arms on their site, it is really hard to determine fit and finish quality of these guns. So thanks for the review so far. Let us know how it shoots.

Can furniture be replaced with standard standard 223 furniture? or does things like stock springs have to be stiffer?

Nice! I wonder if you could get one setup as their Eliminator... or Bushmaster Dissipator. I think it would make the 16" barrel easier to live with!

I was reading on AR15.com that this shooting school as been using them.... www.rogers-shooting-school.com The guns seems to hold up alright.

Mike.

Looks good!

NaOH,

Looks like a nice rifle to me...sheesh there are some critical dudes around here :p

I'll be interersted in how it performs as well. I might just hafta' "git me one"!

I got mine to, I removed the last round bolt catch bar, way to problematic to operate the bolt catch and ugly as hell. The other thing that needs cleaning up is the mag well, the flat surfaces are not cut flat and have a sharp edge were they meet the drilled corners.

My upper rail is not to mil-spec, it will not allow ARMS#40 to slip on, mounts that use the traditionnal clamping work fine but anything that requires a mil-spec rail may not fit, I am working with Questar to get that resolved with Oly. We are not sure if it's a random problem or if all rails are out of spec.

From US reports they function flawlessly, I am looking forward to shooting it to see. I expected traditionnal Oly quality, so I am still looking forward to it's good overall performance, and the use of Glock mags is a plus (10 rounds). It's very light, which is a plus. Everything else can be fixed or modified, after all it's an AR so nothing stays stock :D

I called Oly Arms about the Sweep Eject Spring. They say you should get 10's of thousands of rounds out of it. I took that with a grain of salt though and ordered spares. $5 for a SES, $12 for a complete assembly.

I had an OLY 9mm which used sten mags. The early stainless steel SES would fail occasionally, however I never changed mine in 3-4 years I had the gun. The new SES is titanium, should last longer.

Well HeliDoc and I hit the range this morning to try 'er out. I couldn't spent to much time, I'm working nights, but we gave it a good break in.

I tried a mix of 115, 124 and 147 grain ammo in both hollow point and FMJ. Not one hickup from the first round to the last, slow fire and rapid fire. I was using my Eotech for optics.

Mags lock in place easily and drop free without a problem. I'd still like a more positive feeling button added to the mag release.

Recoil seems heavier than my 223. I assume that has to do with the weight of the bolt. Recoil was less than the Storm.

Bolt catch worked every time and brass is ejected into a new area code.

At 35m squating behind the bench with one elbow resting on it (the bench) all rounds were touching or damn close to it. Standing unsuported the group was just under an inch when slow fired. Rapid fire was fun and no more than a 6" group (as fast as I could pull the trigger).

I really want to chop the barrel to 10.5" now. I'm pleased with the rifle.

My review of the OLY GL9

Got mine , first glance was it needed a rebiuld, basics were good. Replaced stock set with a real RRA milspec. Replaced buffer spring with a ISMI chrome silicome. Smoothed out the mag well and polished feed ramp as very rough. Threw the buffer in the garbage as it is a standard carbine buffer not a real 9mm buffer. Had all parts on hand to do the rebuild as waiting for months aquired all the goodies and did my research.
Added a C-more tactical.

Range report. -13 cel. wind chill -25

Started with factory 115 win, flawless. went to +p, then handloads, Was amazed. Shoots awsome, reliable was really taken back. 525 rds perfect. Brass flying perfectly 4-5 oclock. Will I buy another hell-yeah.

recoil was pleasant as with the better buffer and spring. Need the weight in a 9mm to smooth out the recoil.

** Last note thanks Marc at Questar for bringing these in***

Range tested this weekend. Before hitting the range I cleaned up the mag well (dremel anyone) and replaced the buffer tube with a spare in order to get a tighter fit (was a very sloppy buttstock). The gun ran flawlessly and was nice to shoot, ejection was effective she sent the casings across the 20 foot room  . With a 4moa dot sight I got about 2-3 inch groups at 50yrds, I am optimist that she can shoot even better than that. Other than some fixable details the gun is very nice kit, I am happy with her. Time to order some kit for her :)
