Last night I went to my local range for the second time, I picked up a box of the local reloads (Arena) and a rental Glock 17.

The first pistol I tried on my first trip was a H&K USP 9mm. I have to admit, I really prefered the 3 dot Glock 17 sights vs the usp metal plate with a notch (is that what we call an iron sight? sry for beeing a noob).

I could reach the controls almost confortably (maybe with more training and getting used to it), on the USP, I didnt really like the mag release, and I could definatly not reach it.

So I put the target @ 7 yards and started to shoot. Here are the last 20 rounds:

I was quite impressed with those results, my result with the USP were bad compared to this, the sights were screwed on it (the instructor tried it). I prefered the trigger pull on the glock too. I was somehow smoother than the USP's and consistent (altough I only shot the USP in SA). It was pretty light, the recoil was less than the USP. I think I shot pretty fast (for my current experience); I could reacquire target very quickly.

I read a lot about stance and proper pistol grip (mostly Todd Jarrett stuff) in the last week, I think it helped a lot.

All in all, a great experience :)

Total lifetime round count: 100

You preferred the trigger on a glock? I found it really tough getting used to mine, and my trigger pull is still a work in progress.

Glad you had a great time though, keep shooting.

glock has set the standard for the reliable auto pistol so dont be so ashamed the glock isnt a plastic gun its pure perfection and only natural that you like it

Stormbringer: What are those sights called?

novega: I had a sip and liked it, I'll see in the coming weeks/month if I'm ready to buy a jug :D

Onagoth: Yeah I prefered the trigger on the glock vs the USP. Note those those were both rental guns, I don't know their milleage or the treatement they had in the last few years... The USP seemed pretty beated up to me and the trigger was kinda gritty. The Glock had what I would call a "WD-40" trigger :) Very smooth. Note that this is only my second time at the range, I'm not used to any type of trigger yet, those were my firsts impressions

LibertyorDeath: I'm not ashamed, I shot it and I liked it. Glocks seems to move so much people around here (hate it or love it). I have to admit, it wasn't at all a model I would've considered buying, I wanted something I liked to shot as much as I could appreciate the design; it didn't catch my eye at first. I do not dislike the look, nor do I dig it. I'm a casual shooter, I won't carry it, nor will I drag it in sand etc. The Glock is a very effective pistol, a great tool. Now I've tried it and noticed the so called "perfection" of it, after all, it does fit me well, and I shot it good; It's on my possible acquisition list. My goal is to try as many gun as I can so my first buy will be a good buy :)

I do plan to compete once I buy a pistol. IDPA/IPSC/PPC, I don't know yet, I'll assist to a few local matches and see what I like.

#1bcshooter: I do plan on trying a Sig but unfortunatly they don't have one for rent. I have to admit I'm a huge sig fan, it really grew on me and I totally love the design and features. But before comitting, I want to put my hands on one and give it a try (Hey if someone owns a P226, is member at CTVSP Lachine and is willing to let me pop a few rounds PM me :)).

I avoided Glocks for years. Ugly. Plastic. Common. Trigger disease. Fat. Etc.

Now we have three in the family. They never stovepipe, misfire, jam, or anything else that might get you killed. Or annoyed.

They are easy to maintain. The list of accessories is practically infinite.

It is light to carry. It's easy to service. Turn around and there's another Glock armorer.

So, now we own Glocks, a 1911 for pure fun, and a 22/45 to introduce skittish people to shooting.

I've had a Beretta, a Sig, even a Walther. I admire every one of them. But if you want a handgun as a tool consider a Glock.

I recently bought a restricted NIB Glock 19 and the trigger is much better than the G17 I bought way back in 1991. Less mushy and a crisp release, not the 'sproing' release back then.

Whatever gun you shoot the best with buy it and shoot with it.

New GEN Glocks I find also have a smoother trigger, But wait till you add a relatively cheap trigger kit (under $100) and Boom, SUPER light and SHORT!! did i mention SHORT!! :D:D

Hope you buy a G17 to own and then I can say welcome to the brotherhood :D

Best way to improve almost all triggers from any of the large companies: Shoot it. Even dry fire it in front of the TV. Do this often until the trigger wears itself in and smooths out.

Swear to god, glocks, sigs, 1911s, all seem to get better after a couple hundred pulls. :D

Oh and as for the sights... Stock USP sights should be 3 dot as well, unless it's the target adjustable sights.

Out of the factary also the standard glock sights are the box-and-dot sight. 3 dot is offered from the factory, so it's still ISPC legal and you can get the parts cheap and install them at home.

Stock trigger is light enough for me!!!, Very short travel and reset, any lighter and it's a liability for me.

You likely shot a USP Expert, Custom Sport, Elite or some other variant which comes with fully adjustable target sights. The standard USP and USP Compact come with 3-dot sights. I'm surprised that you found the recoil lighter on the Glock, in general lighter guns have more felt recoil and a G17 is much lighter than a USP (probably about 2/3rds the weight depending on the variant).
