From what I understand from a source I trust the quality of these is badly lacking, " Many friends who fired a real deal in China before says the exported version’s quality is far inferior. " I was going to buy one but am now having severe doubts that I would be happy with a cool looking but second rate gun... Is there really anything a type 81 LMG do that an SKS can not ?

It resembles an AK better then any SKS ever will. For most thats the only reason needed to buy one.

The Chinese make some very good products these days. It's not that it's made in China that puts me off, it's the poor quality of previous imports from the same factory.

You know, for someone who has made it clear in multiple posts and threads that he isn’t buying one of these, you sure doing a lot flapping of the lips. There are plenty of SKS threads for you to go to.
 
Have you ever heard people say "go be poor somewhere else". Or "stop liking what I don't like". I think both apply to the Type 81 LMG threads.

Not true, made in same factory. In fact it is higher quality because we have to get factory on board with expectations for aesthetics on our market. Receiver scratches, marks, missing finish is unacceptable whereas for the military orders it's not a concern
