A trusted friend was telling me last night about another local guys hunting trip that was a failure.

The guy owns a 7mm, never goes to the range to practice, and then buys a scope for his rifle, mounts it, without sighting it in...assuming that it will be set already, and then complains that his rifle is not good enough.

I'll spare you the other gong show info. :D

He'll need a bigger rifle as the 7mm wasn't big enough.

I see guys like that all the time. Too cheep/dumb/afraid of their own rifle to practice firing it.

.

Sounds like he needs a .338 magnum or better. If he hits what he shoots at better a big bore and less chance of wounding since it will be unlikely he will hit anything  .And no muzzle brake as their too loud and are for sissies who cant handle recoil.

Unfortunately there are no laws that govern " stupidity" as it is easier to make laws that govern inanimate objects. The really sad part here is that morons like that are what the general public will associate all hunters with.
Sometimes hunting accidents are not really accidental, more a public service. Ask Dan Quail for some helpful hints.

Believe it or not,I personally know a fellow that bougt a 30-30,had a scope installed and boresighted and went out and shot a deer with the first shot that he fired out of the gun. After that he was totally convinced that boresighting was the best way to sight in.According to him it was dead on and didn't waste any ammunition.Of course the deer was shot at less than 50 yards.

The guy's a moron & probably shouldn't have guns... ;)

Therein lies one of the problems with many disciplines. The complete lack of idiot controls. Unfortunately, we have our hands tied in this situation other than refusing to have anything to do with the moron. :( To go afield without having the firearm properly sighted in is, in my opinion, a sacrilege, and shows total disregard for the animals being pursused, and for the image of all hunters. There needs to be some way of getting through to such stupidity. I am at a loss as to what that way would be, short of a 2x4, swung vigorously, right in the forehead. Enough things can go amiss with a well-prepared hunter, let alone someone who lacks even an inkling about ethics and proper decorum. [BTW, it takes 1000 inklings to make a clue!!] Regards, Eagleye.

Geeezz..maybe he should sell the rifle and scope to you ... at a bargain price of course, because obviously they're defective!! ;)

nah, the only mistake here was letting that guy in on the trip. Guys that dont contribute at least SOMETHING to the party...sorry buddy, catch you later. This applies to more than just hunting trips too.

Didn't he at least generate a lot of discussion, after he left off course.
