OMG, Nothing suprises me anymore...

Personally, I'm in favour of a shooting qualification course something like the Finns use before you can get your hunting licence.

Not a bad idea...esp' if we could also get legal access to the Finnish silencers that they put on their hunting rifles. :D

I'll go along with that. But if a muzzle brake increases noise, wouldn't a silencer increase recoil? don't know...just asking.

This falls into the same category.

some of you may remember this story but here it is again

about 7 years ago I called about an ad in the local bargain finder for a Rem 700 243......while making the deal the guy asks me if I want the scope "brackets"........OK, I'll take 'em...then he proceeds to tell me that he only used them once....when his buddy needed a scope "lined up"...he put his buddy's scope on the 243..."lined it up" and then gave it to his friend......I gave him the cash and got the he11 out of there....true story...

saw two fellas at my local range weekend before the rifle hunt. They had a 700 rem with a red dot on it shooting low and to the left at 50yds.I would say about 8'' off at 4 Oclock.Talking to each other they decided to just hold high ant to the right.I tried to correct this by offering to line it up.They were ok with it till I took the windage caps off.Thats when they decided to pass on my help because and i quote they didnt want the scope PHUCKED UP.They left shortly after saying they were headed to the camp.

So I saw not one but two dunces the same day and together none the less. What can one do other than just shake your head.

Maybe instead of ridiculing these unfortunate and ignorant hunters we should help them out? Take them to the range and show them how to sight in thier rifle properly? Spend a little time and teach them how to be a better shot and more effective and safe hunter?

Naw... lets just torment them until they quit hunting and go back to the bowling alley...:dancingbanana:

Chap was in the local outdoors store explaining how his dad had sighted in the 7mm magnum for 1000 yards. He wasn't going to shoot it himself before hunting because he didn't shoot a gun unless there was meat in the sights.
How do you educate someone like that?

this sort of thing should be covered in either the CFSC or the Hunters ed course. not only is it a risk to wounding the animal but it is a safety issue for other hunters in the area if the round doesnt hit the animal and flys off through the bush and hits another hunter how is that going to look to the general public plastered all over the news ?
now ask your self is it the hunters fault for not knowing or our fault for not teaching?
like big red said if you see a guy o nthe line like this take the time to show him how to do things properlyand safely. who knows it may be you or someone you know and love that catches that missed shot

They need to be slapped silly

Years back this guy buy's a Browning eclipse with no scope and the gun doesnt have open sites and shoots a nice size eight point I belive. Go figure:confused:

I talked to a guy once who told me he shot at a moose at the side of the road and the bullet hit 15' above the Moose and the next year the same thing!!

We all know "that guy". A while back, jus sitting around with the guys the conversation turned to hunting rifles. And I chimed in saying that I'm goin to try some different ammo for the season and needed to go sight in at the range. Sadly I'm related to this guy, he said "ah, just take it to that guy at the gun shop and tell him to set it for you. He uses that thing to set it for whatever range you want." He somehow has a valid PAL and does the annual moose hunt(not anywhere near me).

Sadly, I'm related to "that guy" as well. My version of that guy "knows" that his gunsmith is the best in the world because he charges a lot of money, and that the scope that he mounted is therefore perfectly sighted in, and that any assistance from the likes of me would surely cause problems. He also knows that, being a real man, he doesn't require practice, because expert marksmanship just comes naturally to real men. I stopped hunting with him shortly after I started, but it didn't spare me the horror of hearing his stories of shooting at moose at 500 yards....from a boat!

Of course, ridicule isn't going to solve anything, but you've got to pick your battles. This particular one will never be won.

By the way, "operator headspace problems"...that is so perfect I'm gonna use it on my boss tomorrow!

I just can't help wondering if we should even be discussing these morons on the board? Think about it...what a great source of information for the antis. They can all gloat and spew things like "see, I told you, these guys are all idiots with guns" and what a great place to gather evidence against them. I compare it to the movies you see about the serial killer that revels about seeing his name on the evening news. I've known of morons like that too, I'd rather forget about them.

Reminds me of a guy who told me he shot two moose with one shot, although they were some hundreds of yards appart!!

Apparently the bullet went through one, hit the ice on the lake that they were standing on, bounced up and killed the other moose!

I stopped listening after that.

My friend Johnny said when he was a teenager working on his father's salmon fishing boat they were anchored up along the shore somewhere before the opening and his Dad said to him and the other teenager on the boat "Why don't you boys go shoot us a deer for meat?" So he took the rusty old 303 and rowed ashore with this other kid, a Finnish immigrant, and before long a deer jumped out of the bush and started bouncing away so johnny shouldered the gun and fired, dropping the deer witha shot inthe back of head.

The other kid was deeply impressed, and Johnny took the praise but knew something was wrong.

A few weeks later after the other kid quit he took the rifle and shot it at the side of an old shack somewhere and found it was shooting five feet left and three feet high.

The other kid became an avid hunter and Johnny didn't.

I was scrolling through to see how long before someone suggested that being uneducated in a specific discipline was not the same as being an idiot. Great answer Red, and I'm not surprised it was you that came to the conclusion I did.

An idiot is one who closes his mind to a better course of action, and from jjohnwm's last post this might sadly be the case.
