[h=1]Southern Mountain Caribou Engagement Demanded Immediately[/h] November 23, 2018

It has come to the attention of the Peace River Regional District that the Province and area First Nations are very close to signing an AIP (Agreement In Principal) on the creation of a large area dedicated to the protection of the Caribou. The purpose of the area is said to be in response to the Federal Government concerns about Southern Mountain Caribou Recovery in the Burnt Pine Herd. Sources tell us that this may include loss of access by industry and the general public to a large area of approximately 420,000 acres or 650 sq. miles located from Chetwynd to Mt Lemoray North and South. This could result in significant loss of annual cut in the forestry industry.
In May of 2018 Federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Catherine McKenna, declared that a few Southern Mountain Caribou herds face “imminent threats to their recovery”. The Province of BC has committed to protect and restore caribou habitat; the Peace River Regional District is supportive of these efforts but know that the stakeholders who are directly affected have not been included in planning and that all initiatives must be a result of science and evidence-based analysis.
The PRRD and area residents have been promised stakeholder engagement in this process but it has not happened. There is concern that similar plans are in the works for the Quintette and Narraway herds in the Tumbler Ridge area and other herds throughout BC.
The Provincial Government does not have a mandate to continue to make deals that will devastate communities and the way of life in the PRRD without involving the residents and industrial partners in our region.
The Peace River Regional District demands that the province and the federal government suspend any further discussion on these issues until a comprehensive impact analysis is completed on all socioeconomic impacts of any changes to land use in our communities. This analysis must be done throughout the entire PRRD to accurately measure any and all effects on our communities and way of life.
Immediate and constructive engagement is demanded now before a deal is made.

My country is ill. The condition of Canada is eroding at an increasing pace. The boiling point has been reached and its now only a matter of time now before the pot boils over and makes a big smoky mess

Try travelling. Canada is an absolute oasis, go see Colombia, Venezuela, much of Africa or the Middle East. Or hell most of Miami or Chicago. People bemoaning the state of one of the best places in the world to live need perspective, every time I travel to what used to be called the third world I want to kiss the ground in Vancouver international airport on return. We have issues but they are minuscule.

As for Caribou protection all for it, however it needs to be done. But not unilaterally under the pretence of native stewardship. The Peace District is entirely pro industry admittedly and has little foresight, oversight on wildlife matters is responsible, not reprehensible. Maybe the native stewardship card was the only one the feds had available, I’ll have to read more.

Oh thank goodness they are going to protect the caribou. This is very important with Christmas coming up so that Donner, Dancer, Dasher and Blitzen and the gang dont fall to hunters.

Forests and industry be damned it's about feeling good not making a wage or feed your family........Trudeau wants to be sure his Xmas stocking gets filled....

Help me out here, were these places always this bad or did they at some point reach a boiling point and turn into a big smoky mess?

Exactly. The point is that even though Canada is still good by comparison, it's very much heading in the wrong direction, and down a very steep hill.

This was and is still part of the old YtoY plan from years ago. Yellowstone to the Yukon. A path for the safe places of animals to be safe from hunting and letting them roam free.

Happy to help, they’ve always been that “bad” from the viewpoint of a Canadian. If you think a hundred or more years ago was a better and more virtuous time most would be shocked how good they have it in 2018 Canada. Doesn’t mean we can’t work on improving things, but hearing citizens of one of the best places on earth grovel about life and the state of Canada... well it’s “first world problems”. Those are problems I’m happy to call ours in comparison to those faced elsewhere in the world.
