on a soapbox for a second (hunting safety/ethics ect)

i dunno about that. trophy hunters i have seen are willing to take more risks and do stupid #### to get "that animal". meat hunters dont care what they get. they just get meat.

So they don't need to spend as much time scrutinizing the target, as someone that wants a specific animal.

I would like to encourage everyone who hunts to stop asking other hunters "did you get YOUR deer/elk/moose/ etc etc. " The rewards of a hunt is far more than what you "get", and besides, nobody has the right to "get" a game animal just because they bought a licence. A better question would be "how was your hunt?" or "what did you find during your hunt" or something similar. To the people who insist on immediately asking "what did you get" I usually answer as whole lot of things, but seldom do I only say if I got "MY" animal.

My boy got a small wite tail yesterday :)
Its mom ran off lol (he never seen it)
I got some photos of grouse (we already had some grouse from saterday)
So we enjoyed looking at them instead of shooting them :)

It has been my experience that new hunters get far more excited than the experienced trophy hunters, that have already killed many animals.

Tell that to the majority of trophy hunters you see on wild tv. "I have to shoot this arrow through the V in that tree to get a heart shot"

This thread went from heartfelt concern to the same old hunter vs hunter, gun owner vs gun owner, ford vs chevy stuff. Nobody's interest is more pure, meat hunters have their issues and so do specimen hunters. As do Fords and Chevies. In the end we're all enjoying the same sport, wish we could act like it.

So just how many people are killed in Canada each year, as a result of those arrows. You could use only your thumbs to count them, and likely have two thumbs left over for the vast majority of years. Then compare that to the number of people that are shot by the people that mistake another human for a deer, because they don't take enough time to properly identify the target.

This!!

I enjoy a good debate and have a lot of respect for people that can agree to disagree. Unfortunately it seems next to impossible on CGN to have an adult discussion. That is why I tend to keep my posting to a minimum. Perhaps it's just a lot of misunderstanding (hard to always understand someone's intent via text or posts) or maybe it's trolls or people who only believe they are right and no one else has a valid opinion. Who knows.

There are idiots on both sides. Plane and simple. Its not sustenance hunter vs trophy hunter. Its idiot hunters.

Durring hunting season people should be wearing hunter orange, be it hunter or hiker.

And anyone killed by a hunter is to many.

this is the biggest problem.

I have been "discouraging" those people from dictating 'ethics' to everyone else

While I agree with some of what you've said, how is it we do just fine out west without orange? Last one I know of in BC was an American client shot last year when a wounded grizzly charged and he was hit by accident. Orange wasn't going to help there. You'll have to forgive me but I have limited patience for "If it only saves one life" arguments when the problem is arguably not real, or it's a hunter education issue. Kuiu has yet to offer good mountain hunting outerwear in blaze orange as well.

This thread has turned into YouTube. You start off watching a video on how to fix a plumbing issue and an hour later you are watching videos about a guy that tapes things with packing tape.

Like ibsaid in a previous post. The only thing thats going to solve it is to make the hunter education course more stringent. Have live fire, need to be able to hit a walking target at 100 yards. Have targets set up with people pictured in the background. Etc.

We are making broad statements that the new hunter is more likely to shoot someone because he has never harvested game before. With that kind of thinking we must have all shot someone before we harvested our first animal. ( this is absolute bs )

I would like to see the stats that have been used to come up with this information !
