I have a question... since we can hunt all the game that our republic's lands feed, save for turkey..... but other provinces recognize our Hunter education course... and let us hunt turkey there... if we change residence...... I have a question
If one would come from -say BC - is ON MNR going to ask that hunter to take the crappy course to harass the gobbler?

I just don't see why they are milking this over and over while we don't have a page on their website (at least not one with a link on the homepage).....

The p*** off ontarian....

I took the course with my father 5 years ago and enjoyed it. At the time we had no idea how to hunt Turkey (we could have figured it out on our own). The course was educational, good place to connect with other hunters and gave me a new appreciation for the OFAH and the efforts taken to restock these goofy birds (now if we could just get them on Manitoulin).
The safety record in Ontario compared to any US state in the spring hunt is impressive, I don't think I would have wanted to be wandering around the woods with 35,000 other guys "tryin' to figure it out". Also I think the course has a great deal to do with the huge popularity of the Turkey hunting in Ontario.
Now that being said I don't think my son or daughter should have to take the course because that basic level of understanding is there. It can be passed on in the traditional ways. But given the special circumstances of the Ontario Turkey hunt I think the course was valued and met an important need.

Thats perfect John! Although it is a boring course, it does teach some very useful hunting safety information and I think if more sleeping hunters paid attention......maybe just possibly we wouldn't have turkey hunters shooting their partner in the back with a crossbow while attempting to "push" turkeys. My back is to a BIG tree and I'm only ever caught in the woods with another hunter I can trust. We always do the colour check for each other before we go in...thats no red, blue or white for those not awake at the seminar.

The course was great when they ran the very first ones in 1987.... I was there.
Since then it has become a day long torture session with too much commercialism and redundancy.
But you must remember fellas they are teaching to the lowest common denominator.;)

I could stomach it IF they taught courses for other game species.

Why not a deer/moose/bear course, waterfowl course, upland game course, predator course ???

Just another cash grab !

Ok, I was kidding, the course wasn't quite as bad as I expected it to be.
There was a clear attempt to market the sponsors products throughout the presentation. Gotta expect that I guess, when the course is sponsored.
The gear they were selling was all good stuff near as I could tell, and the prices were about what you'd pay elsewhere, for non-clearance items.
They did a good job of presenting hunting technique, and we watched several films of actual hunts.
Could it have been a lot shorter, and simpler? You bet your ass!
I couldn't sleep anyways, my chair was damned uncomfortable. :p

My feelings exactly. For me it was a waste of time.

OFAH's efforts would be better spent fighting for firearms owners' rights.

Money grab, plain and simple.

If you can hunt grouse in Ontario why can't you hunt turkey? Same thing only bigger.

Next thing you know we'll have to go and pay $50 to take our bunny hunting licence. You know how deadly those saber toothed cottontails can be, Gatehouse should start a rabbit defence thread somewhere.

The course I took, half the people in the room could hardly speak, let alone read English. The "Instructors" coached them through the test, basically giving them the answers. Typical government crap, money grab in my opinion. They had the "Certificates" pre-printed, because as soon as you handed the test in they gave you your Certification, if you passed. To my mind this seemed like everyone was going to pass, regardless of their test score. Another case of my favorite organization, OFAH, profiting while they continue to scr$w over hunters.

The turkey course is a lot like the Hunter safety course. A two hour course cramed into 12 hours.

I did not mind it, learned how to hunt them, much different than deer hunting, my dad knew nothing of turkey hunting but we were doing it together and he took a lot out of it. Took us 3 years but I got my first two years ago with him calling the bird in.

The current turkey course has become a commercial for several suppliers.

My son took it two years ago..........what a waste of time. I took it 6 years ago and it was MUCH better.

the course i took was long and dragged out.....afull day shot to hell.... a few good point,s were taught.......
but no reason to drag it out for a full day...
if it was cut down to about 3 hours... it would have been not to bad.. but after hour,s of repeated advertisement.. it was nappy time for me:rolleyes:

From what I've seen in the woods in the last 10 years I think most hunters should have to do it twice.

1st for the Whinning and sleeping
2nd to learn what every turkey hunter should know, Like STOP sneaking into setups trying to shoot birds.

Can you just amagine if Know one knew about safety in this sport , man Turkey hunters would be dropping like flys. Lets put on our Red turtle neck and head for the woods and do a little gobbler hunting, not even knowing that your going to spend the next 2 weeks in the hospital with no eyes !

Stop your damn whinning about taking a day out of your life to have it saved in the end by someone else that seen the same problems that could very well happen in the spring woods.

How come I have to take this Money grab course for Turkey hunting and I don't have to do it to Grouse Hunt !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Grouse are Grey and dark and Fly most of the time, Not Red ,White and Blue something that every Turkey hunter is looking for at the time you are out. Did you ever look at what colours are in a everyday living clothing ??? Yes on a High part RED WHITE and BLUE and I still see stupid asses wareing these colours turkey hunting.

AS far as I'm concerned the MNR and OFAH saved your damn Ass making everyone take this safety Course wether you liked it or not....
