one 870_cross-section of barrel options .... what's your choices ?

Not sure where you can find the weights listed.

I believe there's a bit of difference in contour between earlier Wingmaster barrels with fixed chokes, and later ones with removables, although its probably not dramatic.

Ok thanks, I'll investigate this more throughly.

FYI .... for those interested ..

My ideal ribbed/smoothbore/removable choke barrel length would be 24". Only company I've stumbled across that offers this length is Carlson's barrels.

So .. I contacted them and it's only available in standard weight contour, not the lighter Wingmaster weight. Was hoping they offered em in the lighter version.

You could of course have a longer Wingmaster barrel cut down and threaded for thin wall choke tubes, although you'd probably have to get the barrel for cheap, something like a non steel shot rated 30" fixed choke that hardly anybody wants, to get it done cost effectively.

I've run all over the place with barrel length over the past few years. Regret selling some of them, ended up with doubles of others. The 870 platform, like most popular remington platforms, offer a ton of choices.
The 8.5 (grizzly barrel) was too short imo. Felt like I was going to lose fingers every time I had it out.
The 12.5 was my go to for a bush defence length. Wish I had of kept it.
The 14 is great. I currently have a 14" on my backpacking 870. I think the 18" is the best all around. I have one set up in a sling that hangs a bit low but very useful all around.
To answer your original post OP, I have a base 870 with a 14, 21 w turkey chokes and a 28 with chokes. Those 3 seem to cover everything I need out of a pump action.
Everything shorter than a 14 seems to be very loud and doesn't group well. Also I have never appreciated rifle sites on a shot gun. To each their own I guess. Some guys love em. Also the rifled barrels aren't my bag either.

Been mulling this idea around 870P. I'm in no rush on the longer barrel so I'll keep looking for the appropriate solution. Either way I'm sure it will cost more than I should spend on it .... usually does these days ! Thanks for the idea.

Interesting insights MackForce.

The only use I could see for an 8.5 (I'd have a hand-stop/sling plate on it) would be with a Raptor grip so you could conceal a small cannon. It would be nasty to shoot in this configuration and we're not allowed to carry such a beast so that's out.

I dig the 14's a lot. Have yet to own a Remington 12" barrel but have a 12.5" tricked out Grizzly. Think the 14" is just about perfect in the short dept. The 12" gains very little over the 14" imo.

Agree with you that 18" is the best all around. It can get many jobs done.

Have never really given much consideration to the 21". Maybe if I hunted Turkeys it would make sense.

28" seems like it's pushing the length limits of what I like. Guess the problem is I'm always referencing bolt action rifle barrel lengths to shotguns. Huge fan of shorter bush bolt actions ... so once a barrel starts heading over 22" I start thinking it should be a 300 wm and up. This is why I like the 24" SG idea, with 26" starting to push it.

(The idea of a 30-34" SG barrel seems so specific to me can't imagine ever needing it).

Currently have no need for a rifled barrel but I like the idea of having the option around just incase. It's probably lowest on the option list.

I'm uncertain on the rifle sights for SG's as well. Currently mulling over a purchase of one. I use em on a bush bolt action so doesn't seem strange to me, hoping I don't feel differently about it on a shotgun.

I like a 28" barrel for pure shootability, compared to the short stuff they swing better, tame the muzzle blast and sound pressure, and IMO a bead sight is more effective if its situated on a longer barrel.

You guys mention Police as a barrel contour, supposing i was looking a for an 870 Police where could i get it? (I currently do not have access to the EE for unknown reasons and I've applied almost 3 weeks ago). Would i have to go to a manufacturer distributor like Stoeger in Whitby?

The barrels I see in stores and on sites are almost always the Express contour/weight. Don't think I've ever seen one listed as Police.

Maybe contact Gravel Industries (Cdn. Remington. Dist.)

I screwed up the wording, I mean an 870 Police shotgun. I swear I've seen them mentioned in the Black and Green shotguns section as a model people like to build off of.

I got mine via special order from a local gun store that didn't carry them normally AFAIK, but various dealers carry them as a regular item.

If you're going to use one as the basis of a project gun, then a Tactical Ordnance or some other semi-custom job might be worth considering.

That was what I was thinking of buy an 870 Police Magnum and have Casey and his crew make it a monster if you know what i mean ;). Or maybe buy 2 and take one hunting.
Where'd you get yours P?

Wes

It was Reliable Gun in Vancouver IIRC.

Understand though that other than the rollmark and the heavy barrel, there isn't much on a Police that's going to be different than an Express if you wind up requesting a full custom job.

Noted, in that case what's a Police barrel worth?

870P ...Your post inspired me to look a little closer at my 870P's.

All this time I thought both my 870P barrels were CYL. Turns out one is CYL and the other is IMP CYL. Had em both for about 10 years.
That'll teach me to pay closer attention !

According to Gravel's parts department, a Parkerized rifle sighted 18.5" IC choke Police barrel, part number F242549AS, the same as I have, goes for $257.95

A Parkerized bead sight 18.5" IC choke Police barrel, part number F242243, is $180.
