One AR-15. Just gimme it straight!

I've had good experiences with Colt, Bushmaster, Armalite, Eagle Arms, and... Norinco, of all things! All worked fine. Only thing I've owned which sucked was SGW/Olympic Arms. Currently run Colt Canada and HK, both of which I'd highly recommend. That being said, there's been no functional advantage to my current guns over any of the others I noted.

New rifles:

Core15 M4 piston
Ruger SR556 piston

A used DD could be nice in that price range.

NEA... Nope i'll pass ! Even if they fixed all their issues and have a excellent warranty, there is enough AR15 manufacturers out there that dont have their "failure" track records to choose from.

If you want a particular gun - like a PDW or something 'different', and you know exactly what you're doing, and you've got a bin full of parts (BCG's LPK's etc.) that you know you're going to swap anyway, no reason not to buy an NEA, the big bits are fine. That's not you. The Ruger is interesting, I have one, don't buy one - too many odd parts, and the weight distribution is all up front, you'll end up wanting to change things, which means money. If it was me, I'd get the stripped down Colt - you can put a forward assist and a door on it over time, and it's a good way to get a quality AR for less. The less you spend getting a decent gun, the more you have for mags and especially ammo. If you have a choice between more gun and more ammo, go with the ammo.

I added some details to post 10, as well as a link to what I think is possibly the best budget AR deal out there now ($869 Bushmaster at CSC). Runner up: the $999 Colt Expanse at Bullseye Sports is a decent start. I like that you can add the ejection port cover and FA on your own time, though I'd rather not be without them in the first place...

Windham Weaponry should really be on your list as well. Great value, mine has been flawless.

DD, Aero Precision, CC, Armalite (the real AR), Midwest Industries and Windham Weapony are just a few. Home grown Colt is nice sans the IUR due to its outdated quad rail and proprietary barrel nut assembly.

Having said that all mid to top brand AR manufacturers build fantastic rifles.

Norc CQB and 2 cases of ammo!

Especially if it's your first AR (sure won't be your last) and you're on a budget; get in cheap, and get shooting!

If doing the blindfold "coke or pepsi" test, I bet 80% of shooters, couldn't even tell one AR from another. Yeah, I said it.

DONT get an IUR for a first gun. Ever if you ask me. They're heavy, clunky and slow.

Otherwise Colt (my fave, I honestly can't see why anyone would pay so much more for a CC), DD, CC (still great gun, stupid expensive), Armslite, Bushmaster... Almost all are great guns and I'd go with the best deal you can get. I Run Guns usually has a great deal going on, on the US website. Ahhhhh.... Remember back in the day you could get a Colt completely Magpulled for 799.00 US when we were at par? Damn good days....

My first AR was 1st Gen Norc (bought at OSS), upgraded to a Colt/Diemaco (not long after) and then to a KAC but ended up with VLTOR and Noveske. I have been going on my 3rd VLTOR build so far (different length and different cosmetics parts) zero issues and complaints, My Noveske the same, I just wish that I could have afford the Noveske when I first bought my 1st AR

And your 10.5" Vltor still has a good home!

Colt Canada or the new colt expanse is how I would go. I have a dpms lower and cc iur upper and it runs excellent. Keep in mind future uses for rifle. If you plan to do service or long distance for with the longer barrels.
