I have come across a cartridge that I can find no information about at all via google. In the course of investigating a rifle in an unknown chambering that came into my local LGS I was given a cartridge on loan that was believed to fit the rifle, which it did. The rifle is a SMLE No 1 Mk 3 that had the barrel shortened at the chamber and rechambered.

It is based on a 7.62 X 51 (.308) case that has the shoulder set back and is shortened as well as having the neck expanded to .35 calibre. The shortening may have occurred naturally as part of the reforming process.
I was lucky enough to run into the bloke who gave the the cartridge to the person who loaned it to me and he told me they were made by Myra Sports Store in Broken Hill. I have been google-ing it and can find only references to other Myra proprietory cartridges.
The sample I have has a MF L2A2 70 headstamp and appears to have the military primer. Dont know if the case is berdan primed or not but may be. The bullet is a round nose soft point.

Dimensions of the round (inches) are ;
2.405 overall length
1.970 case length
0.472 rim
0.469 head diam in front of rim
0.448 at the shoulder
0.386 base of neck
0.381 case neck at mouth
0.354 Projectile at case neck

1.453 to 1.462 base to shoulder (headspace) difficult to measure accurately

Cheers

WL

Looks close in dimensions to a .35 Remington except for the head dia in front of rim and shoulder dia.
Looks like .308 win was the parent case to me .Like a shortened .358 win if you will.
A .35 Sambar is made on a .300WSM case.Harold

The idiots from Homeland Security will seize fired brass if you send them to C+H for dies.Thank you Sunray....... it's obvious it's a wildcat like I said.If the rifle it's in can take it .....it may be easier to re-chamber to an available factory round?

Um, are you sure that Homeland Security will seize the fired casing?

I sent a fired .348 to LBT and had him cut me a bullet mold for shooting cast. ( I did fill the case with lead and did a chamber impact to get the right size for the mold)

Never had a problem with the case going either direction. Although Canada Customs seems a bit less excitable about such issues.

Maybe coming from Australia it might be looked at differently...Who knows?

Entering the States stuff gets opened and seized all the time. It's hot or miss depending on who's opening the parcel.

I doubt this is a SAAMI'd cartridge, therefore it has no proper name or designation. The visual says it's just a 358 Win with the shoulder pushed back and the neck lengthened. This could be intentional or a reloading f**k up, a fired case from the rifle would tell more.
I did this with a 300 Sav case years back, pushed the shoulder back until I had a .400 " neck length. I wanted to create a very accurate 30 cal with less powder capacity, sharp shoulder and good long neck for good bullet tension and bore alignment. I designed it as a silhouette cartridge and it worked very well with 150s out to turkeys @ 2700 fps and 180s on rams @ 2500 in a 26" tube.

This cartridge could be loaded with 358 Win dies and a 350 RM sizer die shortened to just bump the shoulder back when necessary. No need to send it anywhere, and still cheaper than custom dies.
