I was doing some work in a building downtown for work (commerical hvac) and was told there was lead for me at the jobsite! i was expecting a couple pounds of random piping lead or a small sheet of lead, but to my surprise/luck it was 145lbs of pure sheet lead used to seal off the space above the drop ceiling for return air. AND i was paid to remove it on top of it all :):)

i just got done melting it all down into ingots and was left with 143lbs and made a video of the lead changing colour which is what indicated it being pure lead if your unsure.

Of all the lead I've got/had most has been pure lead in the form of lead pipe and sheet lead. The rest has been wheel weights and a 10 lb pewter bowl.

I thought you got into powder coating? Could sworn I saw a thread on cast boolits from you.

...actually you can taste the difference in metals...brass, gold, etc. ...don't know if you could taste the difference in pure vs. un-pure lead? ...i wouldn't want to try! ...but to each their own!! ...bon appetite!!! (...seconds anyone?) :)

A pure lead score is always good. I scored this pure stuff last fall which came in a 123lb roll. I cut into smaller hunks for ease of transport.

And a year earlier I scored some pure lead bricks, 18-20lbs x 10 :D

I just use a high tin content solder wire. You can get solder wire at any home improvement store. The tensile strength increases with increasing tin content so read the label and pick up the one with the highest tin content. Then throw it in the pot with your lead. Do a bit at a time until you get the hardness you are looking for.

Never done it but I have about 20 lbs stashed away for a rainy day.

Apparently the ingots have historical value and can self up to $90 if you can find the right person

Castboolits has "calculators" for mixing, don't know if that includes babbit.

Might be my read for tonight.
