One MOA SKS

Most will think it a lie, but honest to god I have witnessed/fired/purchased and later sold an SKS that was just under 2 moa consistently, it has seen the 1.5 mark more then a few times. Not kidding. I am currently trying to re-purchase that rifle as it was the stupidest sale I have ever done. All it took to accomplish was choosing one that showed potential ie under 3", bedding what little practical bedding could be done (not much) adjusting the trigger and setting a screw for over-travel elimination through the back of the trigger guard, weighing SURPLUS ammo to within 2.5gr and finding which weighed ammo it liked better and having a small optic mounted to it. I will take the ridicule now, I know its coming, but there is another forum member here who would be able to back up the claim, as he was the original father to this anomaly. I hope I can get this bad boy back and provide some back up to my rubbish.

That is a simple start to answering Ian's initial question.

Q - Where did you bed it? Under the barrel or the receiver?
 
I have a '57 SKS fac.refurb. that can hit a 6'' gong we set up at a measured 153 yards(Turn in road precluded a longer distance). with open stock sights,i can hit 5 out of 5 with BARNAUL fmj And with some new corrosive ammo as well. that's MINUTE of SKS . like my old DATSUN 210station wagon,it does the job it was built to do....would I take an SKS on a moose hunt,or have driven that old yellow datson to north of Fort Nelson ,I think not....pour money into either and the final result is a 60 year old military rifle and an old jap import.......
 
A 1 MOA rifle is one with the demonstrated ability to shoot many groups whose average diameter is 1". From a statistical perspective, this means slightly more than half the groups are less than 1" diameter. A "group" is 5 shots in common understanding; groups of less than 5 rounds must be multiplied by a factor >1 to compensate for the smaller sample size. There are several statistical discussions available on the net for those interested in greater detail.

Bottom line is a rifle is not "1 MOA" because it was able to produce 3, 5 shot 1 " groups on its best day - even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. Because an SKS has none of the features that common practice has established are essential in highly accurate firearms, I doubt any SKS is capable of 1 MOA.

If I tape an SKS sling swivel to my heavy barrel Savage, I have a "modified SKS" that is capable of 1 MOA.
 
To be honest I don't remember everything that was bedded as I did not do it myself. There is lots of info about it when you look it up though. I also should mention he recut the crown as well.
