Cariboo area guys,

Just a question for you all. Luckily I got 2 full weeks off from work so I will be heading up for my annual Cache Creek area hunt for at least 16 full days. Yey. :)

Anyhow, we usually set up camp somewhere along 3400 road past loon lake. If you are still with me, when it comes to the area I am talking about, keep reading.

Well last year I saw a lot of new logging and what not, I am just wondering how bad the clear cuts might have gotten since last year? I mean I know that there is some pine beetle infestation going on there but I am hoping that there is still some woods left there.

Also, any of you been doing some scouting up around there, seen anything? Care to share what conditions the majority of the backroads are in ?

Well that’s about it, I will be driving thru Cache creek on October 1st so wish me luck. I am hoping to have some pics or vids to post here at the end of the hunt.

It will be just four guys in the hunting camp so a little more of a peace and quiet type of deal, which is better anyhow.

Cheers,

Alex

You are going at about the right time... lots of the deer from around 70 Mile area are moving down that direction by the first week or two in October. While out grousing last week I saw a LOT of deer on the move. Others head southwest towards Gatehouse's neck of the woods.

Pine kill is brutal in my area, but I'm not sure how bad it is around Cache and a bit north of there. The back roads can be gumbo in isolated spots, but overall it's not too bad. Just stay out of the ruts! If there's no ruts then the puddles (small ponds!) are usually hard bottomed.

In two days last week I saw three groups get their deer in 5 and 3.

Had to laugh at one group, all set up with trailers and ATVs and all, gave us dirty looks cause we were grouse hunting in "their" area .... went screaming down the road, and we went up the road maybe 60yds and flushed a group of 8 deer with a 4 pointer in tow.

Good luck!

Cache Creek and Loon Lake are not in the Cariboo, they are in the Thompson-Nicola region,

Mule deer LIKE fresh log-offs. Hunt the edges of new clear-cuts early and late in the day.

Gary's right, you're not really in the Cariboo.... and technically, neither am I at Green Lake.... the south side of the lake where I am is in the TNRD, and the north side is in the CRD.

But you'll probably be shooting deer that came down from the cariboo, so that's close

And all this time you have been claiming to be a 'Cariboo Guy'

Well, you are close enough (and especially because of your hospitality during 'Haggisfest') i would certainly consider you one of us

What do you say 'Boo :?:

Actually the south side of Green IS in the Cariboo even though politically they are in the TNRD. (Popcan really liked the fact I he was not located within my enforcement area. LoL ;) )

The line between the Cariboo and the Thompson Nicola is between Loon Lake and the villiage of Clinton so I was just splitting hairs with Olek_Z

 :? if i remember correctly, the sign saying 'you are entering the Cariboo' is located about 40km south of 70 mile house :?

OK. Sorry for the regional mess-up... :)

Anyhow, thanks for the info there guys. I'm hoping it will be a nice trip. As long as it does not rain too much I will be real happy. Snow is great... rain just sucks... imho.

Cheers,

Alex

I don't know what is happening around Cache Creek right now but here the fall migration is underway. Lots of does, fawns and yearling bucks are loosing elevation and heading for the wintering grounds.

The small bands of bucks are starting to break up and while still in the high country they are starting to gear up for the rut that will be in full swing in 5 - 6 weeks. Most bucks are fully stripped of velvet, and except for the one Robert G shot last week 8) , they are wearing their winter coats.

I LOVE the fall!

The backroads are fine up this way (east of green lake) so I don't think you'll have any problems unless we have some really nasty weather between now and then.

Tons of deer around here, had to do 2 panic stops on the highway last night when they decided they'd like to mate with my grill. I've been seeing the same group for weeks in our field, so no sign they are on the move here. Not sure why that would be so different relatively close to popcan.

Popcan supports our local range, so we'll still allow him to call himself a Cariboo guy regardless of his political ties (unless we spot a "VOTE LIBERAL" sign in his yard in the future). Of course the Lone Butte bash might be influencing that decision a bit, I wouldn't want to miss out if Gatehouse cooks up another feast there! ;)

:D ---LATEST POST--- :D

Well it's 1:30pm at the office. I can see my truck and camper parked outside my work... Just 3.5 more hours. Then it's off to my friends house to finish packing, hit the pub for a few beers and go to sleep...

Tomorrow at 6am I'll be having a Timmy's coffee and on my way to the woods. Weather report is positive and weather will be cold enough to have the animals hang without worry (optimistic thoughts, eh?)

I will return October 15th or a little earlier. In any case this is the 1st time since i finished college that I have 2 consecutive weeks off. And what a great way to spend them. In the woods, doing what I love and sharing it with some friends.

Should be great. I guess I'm a little "pumped" for the trip. Hey aren't we all. It's not like there is a deer/moose/ season year round. Maybe I will get lucky again and bag a deer or even an immature bull? In any case the time will not go to waste.

I hope you hunter's out there get that same great feeling year after year when it is finally time to load up the gear and head out. I mean all these trips are always planned out 6 months ahead..

Well good luck to all this season. I will provide you with some pics from our camp and maybe some nice animal pics if we get fortunate.

Cheers & good hunting,

Alex

p.s. Did this write up make you think of going hunting.... :)

Have fun!!

Is there a pub in Brittania now?

No, no... I am going to my friends house (Surrey). That's where the pub is. Also, the closest pub is the chief in Squamish  .... but i prefer the one that looks like a log house off the 99, forgot the name of that one. Anyhow I should be excited.

I am not excited about the fuel bill though  oh well.

Hi Alex, get a big one and do a big show off here! :D Only at this time it shows the positive side of being single. Damn I wish I be able to get away for 2 weeks.
