Since bigger things can be taken with 22mag why is eveyone jumping
on 17hmr? wouldnt 22 mag be better? Ive never shot the WMR so I
can only compare 17 to 22lr
Thanks as always

It really depends on your application (at least sort of)

Target and small varmints 17 hmr hands down 22mag is not even close.

If you plan on eating it 22 mag have bullets that are less destructive.

Stuff up to the size of a red fox again it is hard to call if you look at muzzle energy 22 mag seems to have an advantage but if you look at energy after 50 yards the leads not that big at 100 only the 50 grain Federal has a real lead in energy.

When I had my 22 mag I was happy to hit a golf ball @ 100 3 of 5 times. With my 17 hmr I bet it would be closer to 200 yards for that hit ratio.

Personally..I've never owned or shot a 22mag, but I have had several 22lr (1 Mosberg bolt, 1 Cooey bolt, 2 Ruger 10-22s and now a Marlin 7000) and I also own a 17hmr and it sure puts a grin on my face. If I'm not hitting what I'm aiming at out to 125-150 yards, I know it's me and not the gun.

Thinking after a lot of reading i might do the 22 magnum.
I live in a really flat place with a tree line everynow and then so I might
not nee as long a range. Also I want to eat the meat I take.
Im thinking rabbits. The 22 mag seems to have no deviation at 100rds
So i think that my be my caliber.
Again if you have anything to say about it let me know.
Im still a little unsure

I have owned both. 17 Marlin Vs and a Ruger 10/22 magnum. I actually traded the .17HMR in for after market parts for the 10/22 magnum. The .17 was fun to shoot and was really accurate out of the box. Less than 1" at 100yds all the time and 200yrd hits on water filled coke cans were not only possible but repeatable. However, for varmint hunting (gopher hunting) it killed them but spectacular.
Now for the 22 magnum. I forgot to mention that I have also owned a Ruger 77/22 varmint and out of the box that would shoot 1.25-1.5" at 100yds. My magnum shoots 1" or under @ 100yds and it is more powerful than the .17HMR. The mag provides enough power to aim right on @ 125yds and provides enough power to take bigger varmints. The hits on a gopher are noticably more spectacular all the way out to and past 100yds and in my opinion anchors small game more efficiently then the .17.

If its pin point accuracy you want...go with the .17. If better then reasonable accuracy is good enough for you and more omph is desired go with the magnum. I is the most powerful rimfire out there and I think that it is just as fun to shoot as the .17 and the ammo is cheaper.
You could also buy a 10/22 magun and customise it to shoot just as good as the .17 with the benefit of more power. Hope this helps.

I really like my Cooper Model 57 (shown here) in .17HMR. It is very effective on small animals like squirrels out to 150 yards or more. My .22 RFM I use like a .22LR with a little more oompf, but that is it's limitation.

Now on the otherhand, the .204 Ruger delivers everything promised with the .22 RFM and more. An awesome light varmint capability!

If you plan on eating it then you would be back to the 22WRF!

Less powerfull than the Mag and more powerfull than the .22lrf!
