one or the other

If you go with the S&W, plan on doing the trigger, I have heard a lot of " the trigger sucks" on it, and the Sig is DAO I believe. I have no experience with either, hopefully someone else will chime in.
The new Remington R9 is in your price range, but it's a brand new gun and not a lot of feedback yet. If it was me, I would save a few more bucks and look at a Canik tp9sa, new around $550, great pistol for the money. I own and shoot an FNS9LS, a used one would be in your price range, and you can't go wrong with it!
Bersa Thunder pro and a few of the Grand Power offerings will be right there price wise also, and don't forget the Girsan Regard, all of the pistols I have mentioned have a good rep, and are worth a look, in the end I hope you find one you love

I have been to the end of the net and back and have been reading reviews on all the pistols you mentioned except the Rem.... I like the looks of the smith but really dont want to spend the extra on mods. They should come modded (is that a word lol) from factory. The sig has great reviews. Its hard living up north no place to go and check them out I might just have to make the trip.I used to have Barettas back in the day.I am sort of leaning on a lighter platform to try something differant. There is just way to many too choose from I cant make up my mind. Its nice to have access to this sight and get input from owners.

The sd9ve seems to have a following...didn't keep mine...slide was beautifully made but the frame always felt cheap...sig p250 serials pistols are great if you are a fan of dao..the p320 is a better all rounder...and either is a great shooter, just choose a frame size that fits your hand best...alternatively...Canik tp9sa or tp9sf elite are in your butget and very nicely put together...hard to fault the quality for the price...again a damm good shooter....enjoy the search..

Has to be new? I feel like that tight a budget would be better spent on a used gun. 500$ + taxes and shipping gets you close to 600$, that's in the m&p territory or Glock 17.

Ya I am looking at new, I even considered a zastava m70a very reliable , a little heavy though.I fired off an email on a p250 just wondering if they hav a polymer guide rod or stainless? I am guessing a lot of manufacturers are going the plastic route?

FNS9 is all metal internals, even the striker mechanism, just got the new Calibre mag today and they disassembled their long term tester and were quite impressed with the internals, a lot of the polymers are plastic, not the FN

Hey I am an SD9VE owner, I purchased it on the EE here. The trigger is not as bad as the reviews say, I was relatively new to pistol shooting and it helps to learn on a heavier more pronounced trigger I found. The trigger reset is noticeable which is good for that. I am still trying to find a comfortable natural grip on it (I actually find shooting a Sig P226 copy more natural). Overall it's a good pistol, good sights, fairly accurate etc...my only gripe is the slide to frame fit was not as tight as it should be, the slide is great but as IMPORT said the frame does feel a little cheap. For the price though you could always flip it if you didn't like it.
