One piece VS two piece Leupold bases?

Hi Folks,

Awhile back, I recall reading where someone had suggested that a rifles accuracy would likely improve if the owner made the switch from the one piece Leupold mounts they had in place to the two piece version...

Is there any truth to this?

Thanks, Jeff/1911.

I prefer two piece bases. You will never notice a difference accuracy wise with quality bases, and one piece bases tend to interfere with loading your magazine.

yeah I prefer two base pieces too.

I don't trust those two big screws on the rear Leupold style bases.

If going Leupold, I'd use the dual dovetail R&B or Weaver all steel bases and Burris Zs.

I never load any of my magazines from the top,so I don't find it to be a problem.

I have never had a problem with those screws, despite using the mounts on my ultramags and my 338x8mmremmag.

Haven't had any problems with Leupold's standard bases ... but have converted everything possible over to 2 piece "QR" base/rings. Like them much more, and there is some flexibility as to allowing a couple of different scopes to be switched on or off the same rifle. Very strong, very reliable and return to, or acceptably close to the original "zero" for hunting purposes.

Have been shooting some very good groups while developing some varmint loads for a 25-06 ( quite a few under 1/2" ) ... easy enough with a 6-18x in QR ( two piece base) rings. Come hunting season, the 2-7x will go back on.
"Switch" time ... less than a minute ... no tools required !

I know most folk don't ever have a problem with them, it's just me. :D

I think the Weaver system is simpler/cheaper/lighter and offers more options ..... again all personal opinions. :)

If ejection ports were meant to be half covered, they would have done it from the factory.... ;)

I only have one onepiece on a bolt rifle, and hate it... But, on my 2 semi's, I prefer the 1 piece mount...
But both of mine are inaccurate as they are blakc, not purple ;)

The only advantages I have ever been able to immagine is if your reciever was not on the same hoizontal plane (one ring higher than another) the one piece base, so long as it was stiff enough and did not warp when screwed down, would hold the rings in line. Scope tube would not be bent.

The other "advantage" would be that the one piece base *could* proved a stiffining effect over the loading port on the action, increasing accuracy potential.

2 piece vs 1 piece base

The only way a 1 piece base would be more accurate is if it were to make the action stiffer. With 2 small screws on the front and back, it would not be strong enough to make any difference.

However, if you were to weld the 1 piece base in place it might make a difference!
