I'm looking to buy one temp stable powder to load for 180/200 grain projectiles in 30-06 and 140/143/147 grain projectiles in 6.5 CM. I have my eye on RL 16 and Stabal 6.5. Is there any other powders I should be looking at?

Varget
Get a reloading manual - that will answer your questions.

With all due respect, while Varget is a very good and temperature stable powder, it is not optimal for either of the intended applications, which call for a powder with a significantly slower burn rate, in view of the heavy for caliber bullets which the OP intends to reload. Something in the range of the 4350 or 4831 powders would be much more suitable. H4831 and H4831 SC are very temperature stable.

Thanks gents, I appreciate the suggestions. I do have a few reloading manuals but some of the newer powders aren't included in them. I'll see which ones are available. The H4831 looks promising for a novice reloader since the pressure is low.

Buy the sc (short cut) version. It metrrs much better and uses the same reloading data.

Might not get enough velocity in the 6.5 case. I couldn't get to 2600fps with my 7mm08 and 139gr gmx using D4350, and this lots burn rate is closer to imr4831 than 4350.

I only load 30-06 and I use imr 4064.

If that is working for you, that is good. However, If you are using bullets heavier than 150 grains, you are not
exploiting the potential of that fine chambering. Pressure peaks sooner than potential velocities are reached.

I've been loading the 30-06 since the 1960's, and with 130/150 grain bullets IMR4064, IMR4895, IMR4320 and
similar powders work very well. But the 165/180 will reach optimum velocity with slower powders like IMR/H4350,
Reloder 19, IMR4831, Norma 204 or MRP.. Dave.

Guys, always listen to Dave. He knows what he is talking about.

Can't hurt to give it a try. Part of the fun of reloading is experimenting with new recipes.

You will get good elocity and accuracy with both the '06 and the 6.5Creedmoor using H4350 using 123/140 and 165/180 bullets respectively, at least I have loading it for both cartridges and bullets .
