One powder for all my needs?

You will end up with lots of powder. I tried to do the same thing with Varget when all I was reloading was 223 and 308. Now I've expanded my calibers and decided on certain traits I want in a powder and have Varget, CFE 223, IMR 4166, WIN 748, IMR 4064, H4350, and just a stupid amount of WSF. It will happen!

well I load a wide variety of cartridges from 22 Hornet up to 458Win Mag, including some interesting ones like 310Cadet and 577/450 Martini, throw in some 30 Carbine 300WM and 325WSM and there is no way one powder is going to cover that spread.

powders I have a fairly good selection, I think I am using a few different powders now and off the top of my head H380, IMR 4227, 4895, 4831, 4350, 4198, and I'm sure I missed one or two.

I'm rely heavily on the IMR powders because when there was the big powder shortage that was the only stuff I was able to get on a regular basis. I have used other stuff in the past.

I tried to do that when I first started. Based on my cal's of .30-06, .308 and .223 I went with a lb of IMR4895. I now have close to a dozen different powders even after trading my CFE223 and 8208XBR to a friend who was stocking up on those two. So what I'll suggest is pick a powder for your 308. It's easy to load for and relatively cheap. Learn on that. Understand that the best powder for your 308 will not be the best or sometimes even have data available for another. Go with a proven powder like either 4895, 4064, Varget etc and learn to reload on the 308. Then when you have your handloads sorted out and shooting good, pick up a powder for another and expand. By the time you get to the other cal's you'll have a lot more figured out about your gear and the processes. Stay safe, follow the rules and have fun!
