I believe that it is just a natural progression of human nature...to continue to desire beyond actual need.
And we all go through various stages of the passion...desiring a certain type of firearm to satisfy the current desire...
Whether it be for rimfires for plinking and/or small game hunting... for teaching kids and grandkids to shoot and hunt, or to relive memories of our own youth when Dad/Grandpa/favourite Uncle taught us to shoot or hunt...
Or rifles for hunting, target practice, long range shooting, reloading and learning about ballistics, or just the simple pleasure of making your own ammo that performs best in your rifle, and puts meat on the table for family and friends, etc.,
Or shotguns for shooting some trap, skeet or sporting clays, hunting upland birds or waterfowl.
Whatever the reason, at least we have a choice, despite current political agendas, that we can pursue to our heart's content.
I too, have sold firearms to buy newly desired firearms, whether it me a new rifle or shotgun, a desired used firearm, or to build a custom or semi-custom firearm, as a lefty who likes more obscure calibers cannot always find one that was made to fit my current desire. And like many others here, I too have firearms that I longed for, took years to find and acquire, only to have them sit in the safe and rarely see the light of day, let alone the range or field. And like others here, I have also acquired the ammo, dies and components for each firearm/cartridge.
And I too, have safes that are too full and require some downsizing, and firearms of various calibers that duplicate performance and as yet haven't developed sentimental value and or extensive use will be most likely the first to be sacrificed.
I recently decided that I would sell some of these safe queens in order to fund a African hunt with my wife and father/daughter hunt, that would create valuable family experiences and memories that are more important than material possessions. I still have 5 firearms for sale, and am thinking of adding two more to the Sale List, even though they are recently acquired rifles in desired (at least by me) calibers.
And yet, I still watch the EE or other forums for those hard to find firearms, scopes, ammo and components. And am regularly tempted by items that come up that I would jump on right away if I have the available funds in my firearms fund. My impulse buying is highly tempered by a current lack of space, and other priorities. I will admit that some of the current pricing being asked for on some of these items definitely keeps me from send a "Sold" message! But there are some decent deals still to be found...but I too ask "Do I need it now?"
And I find that I too am apparently raising my level of sophistication as I am parting with some lesser valued firearms for higher grade firearms. As a younger firearms enthusiast, a decent firearm at a price point that my meager budget would allow was the more important, than other aspects of the firearm itself. Today, I look for better quality firearms, with better fit and finish, and better quality wood in the stock. The warmth and beauty of high grade wood has become more attractive to me now, whereas before, as long as it was strong and functional was the only consideration...which is why I tended to lean more towards laminated stocks as they became more available. (The synthetic stocks are practical, but just never did a lot for me, and even today, I only have two firearms with synthetic stocks, and the one is a back up stock for foul weather/rough country hunts as may be needed, and has a laminate stocks for nicer weather and regular use. The original donor rifle came with a decent synthetic stock, so negated the need to acquire one, and I already had the laminate stock, as it was a great deal at a gun show, and fit plans for a future custom rifle project.)
