Just back from a successful bison hunt this weekend...used my Browning X - Bolt Stainless stalker CF, Zeiss Conquest 3 - 9 x 40 in 30-06 using good 'ol Remington Core Locked 180's...dropped on the spot. Thanks everyone for the enthusiastic input! I keep thinking about a larger caliber, but seem to keep knocking things down with what I've got...Pondering going up to 300 WSM, just to add to my potential range...but, don't know if I'll gain much. Oh, and the reason for WSM over WM is just to have a shorter rifle over all for easier transport. Would like to post a pic of my bison, but still haven't figured out how.

Now if it came to one long gun, with my current needs reflecting the nearby terrain, I could upland hunt all small game and WT deer hunt just fine with my 10x10x45-70 black powder drilling.

At this stage of life, I could easily make do with a Ruger No.1-RSI in 7X57... with 154 Interbonds.

Yes the one guy is talking ballistic theory and the other field application.

In much the same way i had the habit of sighting in my rifles for 4" high at 100 yds. My miss was always high, so by sighting in high it forced me to aim and hold low on game. Eliminated my high miss, and in a way it sighted my rifle for MPBR. If the animal was too small in the optic too "hold low or dead on" i didnt take the shot or got closer.

No substitute for throwing lead down range for knowing your rifle and becoming accustomed to recoil and blast.

Since I don't hunt bison or (big) bears, I'm going to have to go with a classic 98 Mauser actioned bolt action, preferably in matte stainless and in a synthetic stock, and definitely in. 30-06.

If we added bison and bears I'd have to revise my caliber choice and would probably go to .338 Win Mag or (funds allowing) the .330 Dakota just to be different...

nice idea, still regret the one i sold while i was still in France a 270 that i never shot ....
