One rifle, one cartridge, one load for everything

Partly because it's what I own and it works very well. Weatherby Vanguard 270 WIN 150 gr Nosler partition. Out to about 500 yards it hangs in there ballistic wise with most offerings, it's affordable, easy to shoot, readily available off the shelf and for reloading. One day I'd like to try the 7PRC, that would be a serious contender.

#1
Rifle - Kimber select
cart - 280 ack
bullet - 155 gr terminal ascent

a very close # 2

a Tikka t3 laminate
300 WSM
165 partition

I guess it should be no surprise that the 30-06 and 180 npt is so popular. I've personally never had a lot of luck accuracy wise with the partition but maybe haven't gave them a proper chance. They obviously work well for so many on here.

Well, if it is truely "one rifle for everything you shoot/hunt" it's very complicated. My rifle with the most rounds down the barrel every year is my Ruger PCC in 9mm for competition (SW Ontario & Michigan). My number 2 rifle for rounds down the barrel is also for competition - MRA Renegade in 223. Guess #3 is my Ruger 10/22, also for competition (steel matches mainly). For hunting, I mainly use my 12g (rabbits, ducks, geese, squirrels, doves, controlled deer hunt) so if I can keep my shotgun I really don't need a rifle for hunting since my shotgun (12g with 2 barrels - shot & rifled slug barrels) can be used from anything dove sized to moose sized. Number 4 rifle would be my bear hunting rifle - each year I take something different (just because) and other than range practice and maybe a bear if I'm lucky (or skilled) but that's only like 40 rounds. But I'm covered with the 12g with rifled barrel if I didn't have any other rifle.

So, 1 rifle? Ruger PCC in 9mm (as long as I can keep all my shotguns!)

300 Winmag with 180 Grn Particians.

I’ve been re-considering going back to this route again or possibly a 7RM/280AI (which I’ve had the 7RM in the past also).

Reality is, where I am and for what I do, the 30-06 covers me well enough with a range of stuff from 168-200grs.

Ruger American Ranch chambered in 5.56, fed via STANAG magazines and the load would be 77gr Sierra TMK's over whatever suitable ball powder was on hand at the time to sling them near 2700 fps.

6.5 Grendel with factory Hornady Black 123 gr ELD-M

5 seasons in Alberta, 3 shooters, 14 head of big game plus 1 wolf, 6-species and counting, batting 1000, walked up to everything, average shot distance 163 yards, average recovered distance 13 yards, 10-420 yards.

Modern interpretation of what's possible with 30 grains of powder. We are primarily meat hunters now, just local average tag filling, non-trophy primarily although couple of the bucks were studs.

Does that ever look like it kills out of proportion to what one might think!

Do you have a favorite powder/load as it stands now?

The OP leaves us with a pretty open-ended question. I chose to interpret it as what I would be carrying in a grab'n'go survival type scenario for sustenance hunting from small game to big and "utility shooting" for two or four legged threats when I could only carry one.
The high-end customs with tight tolerances and parts made of unobtanium would stay at home in the safe.

As to the cartridge and load, I defer you to this thread over on Rokslide... https://rokslide.com/forums/threads/223-for-bear-deer-elk-and-moose.130488/ ... it always rustles Jimmies!

That's kind of what I figured you were up to with that one! And no Jimmies are safe from that thread lol. A while back someone PMed it to me saying "you really don't need a 223 AI" and passing along some details of some of the animals he took with it. Ay carumba.

Hard to say because depends where you live. I want to hunt moose once before I am gone so maybe a 300 mag. Already have almost anything that has been mentioned already.
