One rifle, one scope, one cartridge, one bullet:

Winchester Model 70, 2 stage trigger, laminate thumb-hole stock with a 4-12x40 Leupold. 24 inch featherweight contour barrel, 6.5x55 with 140 SGK's pushed to 2900ish. I am going to build this rifle shortly.

Winchester Model 70, .30-06. 22" barrel, iron sights. I've got one of the "Ranger" models with a birch stock, weighs practically nothing. Needs a bit of trigger love. Add in any decent scope and go for it. I'd take 180gr TSX for bullets if bears are a problem, 150gr around my neck of the woods is fine though.

If I left Africa (and Asia, and Austrailia, and South America, and parts of Alaska) out of the equation, then a .300 Win Mag or similar cartridge would be high on the list. Maybe even my STWs. It's just that when looking for a one size fits all answer, it's hard for me to ignore most of the world.

You're absolutely right on this, though I think a 30-06 with 180s would do this continent bow to stern. I just keep in mind how few of us actually get into the thick bush.

Bear in mind that I have zero interest in being a one gun hunter, so it's largely academic.

mmmm yes you are both right although it wouldn't be my preference. I am still partial to the 7X57.

For right now it is my 7x57 Brno (just for jacky) tossing 154gr Hornadys. With two more elk added to the list from this year it is very confidence inspiring when in hand. Kahles 2.3-7 scope and German #4 reticle.

Now *if I could get my HVA 1100 shooting the way I want it might be a bit better choice. It is topped with the same scope. Chambered in 30-06 it would throw 200gr KKSPs. Until it smartens up it will stay in detention.

I would feel comfortable with a 30 calibre mag. with a bushnell 3200 elite firing a 180 barnes. Personally I use a model 700 remington in 300 wby mag with a bushnell 3200 elite 3x9. worked fine so far.

My one hunting rifle is a Remington 700 ADL, witha Six Enterprises stock installed and bedded, hand tuned action, with a Gentry (Winchester-style) safety installed, Leupold dual dovetail rings holding on to a Leupold 2-7X compact scope. I will get others, but I have absolutely no intention of replacing it.
