One rifle to survive......

.... Thinking back to McKenzie (BC) in 1973/74, with some of the Monster Grizzlies that used to hang around the Town Dump, a SCUD missile wouldn't have been an overkill ! ..... David K.

Does this count as 1 rifle. I have a H&R Topper Model 58. It is a single shot with 2 barrels. 20 gauge, and a 30-30 cal with opensights. If it qualifies, that would be my choice. Compact, and 20 gauge is not quit as bulky, but the 3' mag slugs are pretty potent on the big fellas.

Anybody here seen the movie The Snow Walker? Not a bad movie if you like that sort of thing....

Because much of that movie was done here, and because many locals were involved in making the movie, we had a special viewing before it was released. I think it can be best summed up by a teenage girl in the audience, who, as the hero walks out of the blizzard towards the group of Inuit says, "AS IF!"

Nice scernery shots of Churchill and Rankin though.

I would take my 303 E.A.L. Isn't that exaclly what the number 4 Lee Enfield was sporterized for. They sold quite a number to the Canadian Military for survival rifles.
Me too. There is plenty of ammo around!

Definitely a rifle/shotgun combo by Savage Arms.

If I was lost in the most remote wilderness in Canada I would want to have what I call the Universal Warrior with me. The rifle/shotgun combo by Savage Arms. It is over/under style rifle on top shotgun on bottom. The rifle part comes as small as 22 mag. and as big as 30-06. The shotgun as small as 410 gauge and as big as 12 gauge. I would have 30-06 rifle on top for big game and protection and 12 gauge shotgun on the bottom for small game birds, rabbits etc. It is a nice choice as opposed to a semi or a pump action simply because it is a single shot with a selective hammer for rifloe or for shotgun. Very simple set-up. Less moving parts means less of a chance for the firearm to break or to fail you when you need it most.

Let me know what you think of my response!

I don't mean to sound like a jerk and like I'm picking on you, but you need to do some research. I don't think the 24 has ever been offered in a "long action" cartridge. I could be wrong, but I know you can't get one today. tThe .30 WCF is the most potent you can get. http://www.savagearms.com/24f12.htm Other than that, your theory is sound, except I don't want to have to lug that thing around. They weigh a ton. Also, that means you would have to carry either twice the ammo, or half as much, depending how you look at it. If I'm in bear country, I wan't bear medicine. Sacrificing precious space for a variaty of ammo doesn't sound appealing to me, but that's just my opinion.

...A few years ago we went to a place where if the plane crashed you would prefer to die in the crash. Isachsen, on Ellef Ringes Island Nunavut - far enough north that not even grass grows there. Color on the ground is algae, not even moss. No plants - no animals. Multi year sea ice along the coast made sealing unlikely. There is wreckage from 2 crashes there - I shudder to think what that might of been like! I've been dropped off in some pretty desolate places before, but when the Twin Otter left us there, it became very quiet!...
No wonder you went to Africa!

Africa has a whole different set of "what if" scenerios. I think water would be the biggest concern, followed closely by running into rebels or government troops who may object to your presence in certain areas. These guys invented the 3-S rule. Then of coarse there are issues with the local wildlife. Surviving in the Canadian Arctic might be easier.

I am still undecided what i would want. I know i wouldn't want a 12 gauge. I am not a dedicated bird hunter by any means and i used to carry a 12 just to pot the odd "chicken" i may stumble across but got tired of the space a twelve gauge shell takes as well as the weight. That little Henry "Chipmunk" .22 wouldn't be bad or the NEF single shot .22 Carrying a big game rifle just wouldn't be practical i would think.
