SHTF, EOTWAWKI...blah blah blah, you have one rifle in either 223 or 308....What ammo would you use...remember you are tasked to survive and repopulate the world...so this one type on bullet will be used for; defence, hunting large and small game...etc...

223-i'd use a handloaded 62gr barnes tsx
308-handloaded 150gr Amax or the hornaday factory offering
 
308 - 155gr Nosler CCs, Varget, deadly accurate out to 1000 yards. Savage mdl 12
223 - 69gr Nosler CCs, IMR 4064, deadly accurate out to 600 yards. Savage mdl 12
SKS 7.62x39 6000 rnds scare em, while the others cool!
 
As a "1 caliber for the rest of my life" ... neither of the two options you gave would be my first pick. For all game I would expect to find in Ontario, I'd prefer a 30/30 as my "one caliber".

Of the two otions you gave us, I'd be forced to pick the 223.

For a guy named Max Relax it's funny that you can't even relax a bit and properly participate in the thread, LOL!:p
I can though, if I had to choose from the calibers I have it would be 30-06. Mainly because I can't imagine not shooting my M1 Garand any more, plus already having a scoped rifle in that caliber would be a plus.
 
.458 Win Mag, some casting gear and some reloading supplies.

Load a round ball on top of very little powder for grouse, all the way up to Mammoths (you know, during the coming ice age).

Much in the lines of the comment about the .223 not being able to do what the .308 can, the bigger cartridge can always be loaded down, but you'll never load up a smaller cartridge to match the bigger one if you need to.

But really, if you are talking the end of the world and all that fantasy crap, you probably need a BP muzzle loading flintlock, so you can make your own powder if you must.

I supose this beats fantasizing that you can carry 12 different guns around with you while you repopulate the world. (you can do that with a gun?)

Only one rifle, it would be my Scout Steyr 308 topped with with my S&B 1.1X4X24 Short Dot, best combo i ever shot... Cheers. JP.
 
My Colt Sporter HBAR 20" with 69gn SMK and my SpecterDR. Best all purpose rifle/round I can think of. Would do the trick for just about anything you would need to handle imo.

Ever shoot small game with a loaded down big bore??? I shot a rabbit with a 308win 200 gr cast bullet at around 1000fps, it bloody tore the bunny almost in half, i mentioned the 223 because i think it would make a great survival round...good enough to take deer size game(we are talking survival, ethics is thrown out the window), can be loaded like a 22lr for the small stuff(in a survival situation you'll most likely hunt small game the most), good for defence, can carry almost twice as much compared to say 308win, it would be a toss up between a 223 or 308 bolt for me...

What would be the best general purpose load for either 223 or 308 in a survival situation????

Well there's your problem - improper bullet selection. Next time try a .310 round ball lubed with Alox on top of 6-8 gr of Unique with a wad of Dacron on top to hold the powder against the primer for about 600 FPS and you'll get about the same results as a .22.

There is no logical argument for the .223 over the .308 if you're looking to do more with one caliber...
