While I don't normally wade into many topics on here, I do continually support many of the vendors from here and I am a vocal member of my local community. Not only do I view this bill as an attack on our personal freedoms and property rights, it is a downright miss-guided attempt to appease the vocal few who are willfully ignorant of the laws already in place. All of this is exacerbated by the deliberate misuse of terms, statistics and facts by our media and government to perpetuate an idea that all firearms are implements of destruction and hate, and not the tools that they truly are. To wit, murder was not invented after the firearm. While they always point the finger at firearms when any crime involving them takes place, the question of mental health is never addressed. That is what our government needs to be truly focused on. Mental health is a tough topic to confront, many people are simply scared of being labelled and therefore never seek analysis or treatment. The ways to deal with it are also complex and there isn't a single answer for everyone. With a lack of funding and understanding, sadly, people are often pushed to snake oil treatments of simply stacking more pharmaceuticals until a person becomes compliant and docile, while never dealing with the real issues, and possibly creating more. Tougher penalties are also not the answer, as people already willing to commit murder or other violent crimes with much stiffer judicial, social and moral implications are not concerned with the paper-crimes of gun laws. With millions of law-abiding firearms owners simply wanting to enjoy the freedoms of hunting or target sports, the positive social and community atmosphere of shooting sports is lost in the negative coverage and verbiage surrounding them. This business of prohibiting certain accessories or firearms based on an ever-changing set of unknown ideals and reasons, is simply an assault on our very way of life. While I don't deny that crimes involving firearms are heinous, they simply are not the problem in this country and knee-jerk reactions to events in other countries just stand to divide our citizens further. I cannot provide all the answers to our true problems but I absolutely appreciate everyone who's willing to voice their opinion and send these letters. I've made my opinion know to all the people addressed in the oneclearvoice, with the form letters, and I've sent a few of my own to the decision makers in Ottawa. So lets keep it up, be vocal, passionate and civil. We can show the country and our government that we are not the problem and this is not a solution!
