Only 10 long guns – what would you pick?

I’m posting on this thread because I figure this crowd has a certain bias that I can relate to.

So here’s the question to you guys… If you could own only 10 unrestricted (and likely to remain unrestricted) long guns what would they be and why would you select each one?

Sounds easy right? That’s until you consider the overall cost, likelihood of one day getting restricted, good for target shooting, trap range, hunt whatever you want and don’t forget the zombies.

I kind of figure there’s always room for a couple Ruger 1022s, Norinko M14 or better – maybe two, Berretta Semi and Rem 870 pump 12 gage, at least one SKS. Add one long range bolt 223 and one bolt long range 308 and that’s 10.

That leaves no room for a XCR, Tavor or Famae 223 – maybe higher risk of restriction anyway or worse.

So what would you guys pick?

From the suggestions you guys make I will update this "best of" list:
(Note: Any item in this list may be replaced with a better suggestion at any time.)

1) Anschutz Target Rifle 22 LR
2) Ruger 1022 22LR
3) M1A or Equivalent .308
4) SKS 7.62x39
5) Tavor .223
6) Winchester/ Marlin lever in 38/357 or .44Mag
7) Remington 870 Pump 12 Gage (with 2 barrels)
8) Mosin Magant 7.62x54R
9) Mauser K98 8x57 or Israeli 308
10) (??? 12 gage auto maybe)

11) Flintlock Rifle (This ones actually a freebee because its apparently not legally considered a firearm) ** Great suggestion

Gone through this exact exercise many times in my head. Fun to theorize!
Main things that are important are availability and commonality of ammo, parts and ease of use and portability. Next is distance covered.
I'll go from long range to short.
1. Rem700 .308
2. XCR-M .308
3. Tikka 30-06
4. Tavor .223
5. XCR-L .223
6. SKS 7.62x39
7. Mosin Magant 7.62x54R
8. Winchester/ Marlin lever in 38/357 or .44Mag
9. Ruger 10/22 or Rem equivalent .22LR
10. Mossberg 500/ Rem 870 12ga pump.

The above would be how I would like to build my collection. The ammo is commonly available and I can take most food prey available in BC. For me, I am good from 300yds to 10yds with the above.

Disregarding some rifles for the possibility of them becoming restricted/prohib is a little ridiculous in my opinion. That is almost like not buying nice cars because they might crash one day.

If anything, you should buy one of the rifles on your no-go list to help fight the reclassification's and possibly join a list of grandfathered gun owners if they do reclass.

I basically try to build my collection around value for money spent, current and future availability (and cost) of ammo, reliability, availability of parts, and filling "roles".

Accurate Big Game: Savage Axis .308 scoped
Accurate Rimfire: Marlin XT-22 bolt .22 scoped
Accurate Varmint: Savage Axis bolt action .223 scoped with bipod
Semi auto centerfire: SKS 7.62x39 with peep sight
Semi auto rimfire: Marlin 795 semi auto .22 peep sight or RDS
Big game brush gun: Marlin 336 lever action 30-30
Accurate SHTF Hunting Gun: CZ 527 7.62x39 bolt action
Hunting shotgun: 28" barrel Remington 870 pump action super mag
Zombie shotgun: same as above but with 20" barrel and mag tube extension
Zombie gun: Norinco CQ-A 10 or 14" .223 semi auto

Am I cheating if I go with a two Savage rifles (long action and short action) with a plethora of barrels and bolt faces?

Then I also want a Sako Quad for rimfire options, covers the HMR and 22Mag plus a tack driver for regular 22lr. (Obviously need a 10/22 in the list for plinking and such).

Then for shotguns I think I will pull the same multiple barrel trick, thinking of an early model 870 Wingmaster with several barrels from a shorty Dlask style 8.5 to a long goose gun barrel.

That's my five practical guns. The next five fun guns are harder to pin down.

Apologies if I broke any rules.

If I absolutely had to pick 10 only...

Ruger 10/22
Savage Mk II FV-SR
SKS
Longbranch No 4 Mk I in full military trim
Mosin Nagant 91/30 sniper model
M1 Garand
18.5" M-14 variant
22" M-14 variant
XCR-L in 5.56
Savage Model 12 in .260 Remington

Hmm... tough, but I'll play. I don't actually own all of these (most, but not all), but my ideal 10 would be (in no particular order)...

Long Branch #4 Mk I in full regalia
M14 clone
M38 Mosin (I know, going to get a lot of flack over this one, but if you actually have a good one, It's a surprisingly light, handy, hard hitting rifle. Good bush gun).
Tavor (non-restricted barrel length)
Mossberg mvp Varmint - same ammo/mags as the Tavor to save on some cost - accurate as heck for varminting and bench shooting.
SKS or non-r 858 - and leaning toward the SKS as that would be political suicide to reclassify (so many in the country)
Zastava M85 in x39 - nice accurate bolt that fires the same ammo as the SKS, but's 3lbs lighter, makes for a nice light deer gun.
Remington 870 with a collection of different barrels for it - This will cover anything you could ever need to do with a shotgun.
CZ 452 Lux - The only .22 you will ever need. The only one you'll ever want after you buy it and shoot it.
Winchester or Marlin Lever in 30-30 - Because they just work. Always and forever.

Side not on the 10-22: The most over-rated .22 in the history of .22s. And yes, I'm still bitter about the piece of crap 10-22 I got while Ruger was pumping out "Rifle Like Objects" during the gun panic down south, so f@ck Ruger up the @ss with a pine cone covered in steel wool.

PGW Coyote in 308 or 260 switch barrels
Custom Savage 10 in 223 in the XLR chassis etc- have it
NR Bushmaster ACR with match barrel etc in 223
Anschutz 1827F in 22lr
CZ455 custom with all the extras
Alaskan Scout 44mag
Ruger 10/22 Dlask/KIDD parts
Rem 870
My Savage PC10 in 308 as it shoots crazy nice
ATRS Modern Hunter in 260

And nice optics and extras for all of it!

Mauser K98 8x57
Mosin Nagant 91/30
SVT-40
SKS
VZ 58
M305/M14/M1A

Now the 4 I want but price holds me back
Famae 542
Tavor
RFB 308 24"
HK SL8-4

But my holy grail will be a G43/K43 that I vow to get this year somehow...

300 WM (Choose your flavour)
3.5" 12 GA semi (Again Choose your flavour)
A semi auto .22 (again choose your flavour)
A bolt gun .22

Personally in my own collection that would be a X-Bolt, MP-153, 10-22 & a CZ 453

Add to that list to fill it out to 10
870 shorty....
a 10-22 shorty
a M1A (or a knock off, depending on budget)
an SKS
a mini 14
a .223 bolt gun

YMMV

Does an AR15 lower with multiple uppers count as one gun? ;)

AR15 (223 upper, probably various others.)
Tavor
Marlin 1895 45-70
BLR 300 wsm
FN Police special in 308 (This gun is built, but very heavy.)
PGW Timberwolf (338 Lapua)
Pick your semi 22, probably 10/22 (full custom, minimal ruger parts.)
870P (multiple barrels for various applications)
CZ858 (like this as a blaster more than the SKS)
Some uber expensive double

Right now I have everything but the 338 and a double, and a cheaper semi 22.

Interesting posts so far... thanks guys.

I'm kind of surprised some of you guys are willing to deviate from the popular military calibers rather than keep the ammo costs down and available.

My personal train of thought was to stay within the 22LR, 223, 7.62x39, 7.62x54R, 308 (Maybe 30-06) and 12 gage mainly for the popularity of bulk ammo and available everywhere.

I really like the Anschutz 1827F idea - a real accurate 22LR always deserves a place on the wall.
