Only experienced at pistol now want to reload .270..

Hey fello CGNers,

I recently purchased a rifle in .270 Win and want to reload for it. I already have the dies. I currently reload 9mm and .45. on Lee Pro 1000s. I have one press set up for small pistol primer and the other for large. Is there something different for rifle primers? I know I will need a case trimmer. Later I will probably just go with single stage for rifle but since I have the setup I was wondering what I would have to do exactly to reload rifle?

If you've managed pistol, rifle is no big deal.
Rifle primers load the same way as the rest.
Review your manual, you won't find a lot to worry about.

Thanks. Do you know if I need a new primer tray/trough specific to rifle primers or do I just change/setup the new dies and use either the large or small primer feed that I use for pistol?

The difference between large rifle and large pistol primers is simply height. The rifle primer sits a bit higher, so you may have to adjust your seating depth.

Interesting. Thanks. I am obviously going to read up like I did with pistol but it's nice to get the quick responses on my favourite website that I have been spending way to much f'n time on lately! LOL I am back to work Monday after two and a half month paternity leave. Maybe my gun spending and posting will come back down to sane levels again.

Some of us have accidentally loaded rifle primers in handgun rounds.
The primer sits a bit proud on some cases, and handguns may not hit the primer hard enough to set it off.
Doing the reverse, loading handgun primers in rifle cases, isn't wise. They go bang alright, but can result in pierced, or blown primers due to the lighter construction of the handgun primer.

Rifle cases have to be lubed. Not sure how you want to tackle that on your progressive. Some, do the resize/lube as a seperate step, clean the lube (by hand or tumble). Some use a spray type lube and clean after the cartridges are complete.

It does take considerably more effort to full-length resize rifle brass if you were not aware of this.

What bullet are you looking to load ? what is the intended use ?

If you are not sure...you couldnt' really go wrong with H4831 pushing a 130 gr. bullet of your choice.

i don't think there's enough heigth on those columns in the 1000 to accomodate a 270- the biggest 1000 made is the 223 - you might have to go to the turret to get the length

Thanks. I figured I wasn't going to pump out a few hundred rounds in a few hours like I do with pistol. It probably would be more prudent to set up a single stage for my rifle reloading. Have to make up my mind.

Anybody here use a Lee 1000 for rifle?
