Jeez guys, why not lighten up? The SPS line was designed and marketed to compete with the entry level lines offered by Savage/Stevens, Mossberg, etc... They're able to do that by going with a cheaper stock and less time spent on fit and finish, - but the same steel/action found on their more expensive and better finished rifles.
They built the rifles to meet a certain price point, which they have succeeded at brilliantly. Is the SPS finish as nice as a rich, deeply blued Weatherby? Nope, but then again, the SPS retails for a fraction of what the Weatherby does.
I've got a ton of Remington 700s in my safe and the couple of SPS rifles I've bought/shot have been every bit as accurate as any of the more expensive BDLs, LSS, CDL and limited editions I own. I've used other SPS rifles as donor actions for custom builds and they have produced true sub 1/4 MOA rifles.
As for the question of rust. I've never had a firearm rust on me that received regular maintenance and cleaning. I suspect that the guys complaining of rust are the same guys who break out their rifles once a year, take it to the range with a single box of left-over factory ammo, a black magic marker and a paper plate. After shooting an 8" "group" at 50M, they declare themselves sighted in and ready for deer season! After hunting is over, the rifle it tossed into a soft gun case and poked into the back of a bedroom closet until next year. Never having seen a cleaning rod, let along an oily rag.
