Hello All,

I am just wondering what AR barrel length I should be considering if I was to only own one?

I dont mind the PWS MK107 but with only a 7inch barrel I think it would suffer going much past 200 yards.

If I wanted to stretch things out to say 600 yards what is the shortest barrel length that would be viable.

Could a 10.5 get there or would I be looking at 14.5 or 16?

Thanks in advance for the help

I am sure I'll be corrected if someone strongly feels I am wrong, however it seems to be the consensus here from what I gather and at AR-15.com that 14.5" is kinda the "all around" balance if you will. ;)

If you can only have ONE barrel length, go with a 16". Of course, you obviously have to factor in what the rifle is going to be used for. Even 16" is longer than most people care for in CQB and sweeping rooms.

Currently I only have one AR15 and it's a 20" barrel. I like shooting longer range and don't mind the extra weight for CQB though. Plus, the extra muzzle velocity from the longer barrel is a perk.

If you're going to shoot service rifle match and plan to go down south hunting wild hogs in US. IMHO I personally prefer 16" barrel as my all around AR, not too long not too short. Otherwise I'd go with 14.5" barrel.

Go do a quick read on mid length gas assembly vs carbine length. If you get the assembly vs barrel length just right, your rifle will be very smooth shooting incomparison to others. But ya... 14.5 + flash hider/ muzzle break for 16 inches or 16 inch barrel with midlength gas assembly is ideal

It doesn't really matter what length others tell you they like.
I bought my first one (14.5") thinking I would only have one then I found a good deal on a complete 20" Hbar upper then got a little tired of the 15 seconds it takes to swap uppers so I bought a complete lower to go with the 20" and now I'm keeping my eyes open for a shorter upper and also an AR in .308. They are an addictive range toy and so much fun to shoot.

I would suggest you go down to your local shop and handle a few different ones and just pick the one that gives you a chubby. They can all be accurate and they are all reliable if you take care of them. Plus they are all capable of being converted to any length you want down the road and you will be able to sell all the parts you take off for a reasonable price.

Good luck.

What I want is a HK MR223, i think they are 16 or so, but I love the looks of the ultra shorty PWS or Noveske or that one floating in the nea threads with the spex stock but I dont think ill get any (accurate) distance out of it.

I do own a sl8 so maybe that is good enough for the long stuff and I can get away with a 7 or 10.

SOOOOO MANY CHOICES, this is way way harder than I thought it would be.

If I shot more id just buy all of them but unfortunately most of these toys end up being safe queens with a ton of ammo sitting in the safe beside them.

I like the idea of spending 2 -2500 on a PWS piston AR versus 4500ish on a MR223 but I dont know enough about the PWS to make a 2500 dollar mistake.

I only have one and its an 11.5 - kinda doubt it would perform well at 600 but I have never tried. It is a ton of fun at shorter ranges where I use it though.

If you plan to go south of the border to shoot competition, or varmits.. 16" min..(nothing shorter is allowed..)

Except they include the muzzle brake/flash hider if it is welded and/or pinned so a 14.5" can be OK.

If you're going out to 600 yards 16". Myself I prefer 14.5" but wouldn't be shooting that far with 5.56 normally.

The Surefire Combat Tactics magazine as previously mentioned recommends not going any shorter than 14.5" due to decreased lethality of 5.56 and increased pressures which are hard on the carbine/pistol; especially if using a suppressor.

I've seen someone shoot 500 meters in service rifle with what was I believe a 10.5 maybe 11.5.

At 500m rounds from that shorty were still supersonic and he was hitting a figure 11 with open sights.

maybe not ideal but do-able

16" with a mid-length gas system and a decent brake makes for a very soft shooting rifle. I'm using a Noveske recce barrel on my one 'do-all' rifle. 11" TRX Extreme fore-end, Magpul ACS stock. With a Micro T1 in a Larue mount it weighs 8.5lbs and balances nicely. Use this config for CQB and multigun matches. Swap the T1 out for an MR/T 2.5-8 also in a Larue mount for SR or longer range shooting.

For one rifle, 16", unless you know you're buying it for Service Rifle, then 20"
16 vs 14.5, I'll take the extra 1.5" over a 14.5" for the bit of extra velocity. I own all of them.

I love shooting rifles, I like carrying carbines.
