only pick one of the two. bear stopper.

Is it me not paying attention, or has the 45/70 really gained popularity. I do not remember ever hearing so much talk about this caliber. I know no one in my area who even has one. I called a shop in MTL to see if he had a guide gun in 45/70 and all he could tell me is they kick like a son of a b!tch and tried to persuade me to buy the XLR instead because the short barrel kicked to hard. I called two places just to see if they carry 45/70 ammo, and neither had it. I guess this caliber just is not popular here in Quebec. I asked the guy at Sail (Baron sport) about the 454 Casull and I am sure he did not even know what I was talking about. Seems in my area, I know no one that has 44mag, 444,450,45-70 it must be an out West thing, and all I know is I want one of them :D

I wonder if we should tell the bears exactly how much more dangerous they are on the internet, as opposed to real life?

The 45/70 of course and I'll use B. Mitchell's load of 465gr. hardcast Chamber's bullet,55grs, H-335,1920fps...3806 ft. lbs. energy, what bear trouble??

The 12 gauge Brenneke has a good reputation for killing game. The .45/70 also has a good reputation, it penetrates better than the shotgun slug and is easier to shoot well at longer range. In any big game hunting scenario this makes the .45/70 the better choice.

For bear protection only, I'd use a 20" fully rifled bbl on my 870 and one of those ghost ring rear sight thingys, but alas we never see the bears here in NB, so for me the answer isn't based on solid personal experience.

I am taking a page out of Gatehouses book and getting a 375 Ruger Alaskan. My 12g is good but the further North I go I am feeling a bit underpowered for Grizz.

I like the thump, feel of the bolt action, and the express sights.

Also I listen to the dudes that actully shoot big ass bears.

My Dad Buys, Sells and Trades firearms, so Ive handled both the 45/70 and the 12 Gauge, and Im going with the general opinion of the 12 Guage, just because Im assuming the situation is defense, for shots, Id have it loaded "candycane" style, Slug, 00 Buckshot, Slug.

anyone who accually had experence with a charging bear would know you barely have enough time to s*#t your pants let alone calm your nerves 12 gauge up close personal to get a 45\70 to really preform you need to reload I prefer the cowboy with the 26 inch oxtagon barrel loaded put a bear at a 100 yards I'll take a 45\70 25 yards 12 gauge slug 00 buck slug and if you can unload that quick hats of to you

I know that I should put on my Nomex before I post this, but I would rather rely on bear spray than a firearm. Spray WILL turn a bear FAST, while shooting a bear may or may not slow him down if he is intent on making you dead.

I'd take either. My 14" 870M4 is nice and compact but a Guide Gun woudl suit me just fine too.

Coin toss. Like every other time this thread has been posted.
