Ok, so here's the deal,

I live in ottawa, and I'm going to be a member at the EOSC early May. I plan on having restricted firearms. It's about a 40 min drive from my home to the range, and this brings up some important ATT related questions from this eager noob!

Question 1; How tight do I have to be with regards to the rout I take to get to the gun club.
The scenario migh be that I'm leaving my place on a Saturday morning to head to the range, and I want to take a friend with me. Do I have to get him or her to meet me along the most direct rout to the range? I would hope that I could take a slight detour and pick up my friend at his/her home.
Furthermore, if I want to stop and buy ammo along the way, is it frowned appon to detour and stop at a local sporting goods store to pick up supplies?

I previously asked on CGN if I was able to leave my restricted guns in my car at work so I could go right from there to the range in the afternoon, but the majority of people said that was a no no.... That really stinks, because it will take away from my time at the range on weekdays.

Question 2; Does the ATT mention what sort of vehicle you will be transporting your guns in?
For example, if my friend also has restricted firearms and is a member at the same club, could I pick him up and carpool to the range? This would assume that there were no conflicts regarding the first question. I thought it might be a good way to meet people who are also members at the range, as I could post up on the local forum that I'm headed out on a specific date, and share my car with some people. That said, I don't know how the ATT would work in this instance. I'm hoping it would be ok?

For those familiar with Ottawa, I live near the carling exit/on ramp of the 417.... Carpool???

Anyhow, thanks for reading, and know that I appreciate any input!

Legally you could get away with Q1 but I wouldn't want to have to explain it to a officer if you were pulled over and asked to open trunk away from your main route to your range. Best thing to do there is just buy your ammo earlier if it is way off the route to the range. As for Q2 no vehicle is mentioned and you could carpool but would be a good idea that no one go to far from their most direct route to range. Just incase you have to explain again to a officer.

In the end you just don't want to make life anymore difficult in regards to dealing with the police. In the end if a officer believes you are outside the law in transport you are going to lose. In the short term anyway. Making for a crappy range day and a record. We are already in a sport that the media frowns upon. Play by the rules and all will be fine. Take friends and family out to the range and get them interested in the sport. More people interested and see that it is a safe sport when used responsibly the better for us. Enjoy and keep shooting.

Most direct route while picking up your friend. Don't over think this.
Now if you picked up your friend, then decided to drive two hours to do shopping, let the guns sit in the trunk or another 4hrs...
Get my point?

carling(home) -> pick up your friend(east of you) -> sail store / sports action(ammo) -> EOSC

caling(home) ->pick up your firiend (southern of you) -> le baron(ammo) ->take leitrim rd -> EOSC

I think as long as you follow those two routes, it's very easy to explain to any officers, but if your friend lives in Kanata then just tell him to bus or drive to your place first.

I have to say some of you guys are paranoid. Dealing with the police? Explain again to a officer? What makes you think you would be randomly pulled over AND be told to open the trunk? Is there a GPS attached to your gun that sends out a signal and an alarm goes off if you deviate from the most direct route to your range? Or maybe the cops in Ontario are psychic? Do you think it is a crime to stop off at a store to buy ammo that is not the most direct route to the range? Or to pick up a friend?

Some of you don't travel much with firearms do you? It must be a terrible feeling for you if you spot a police car behind you at some point. Believe it when I say the police just cannot randomly pull you over, start questioning you and search your vehicle. Relax, you will enjoy your sport more.

All this is assuming of course that you do have a valid firearm license, ATT, following the transport regs, not driving like a maniac while smoking pot and downing a beer. Other than that, I'm sure you will get through your day okay.
