Ontario Bear hunting success!

My brothers bear, his first. A boar, another "guess" but how 150lbs sound? Shot with a Remington 1100 12ga using 1oz 2-3/4" Brenneke slugs. James thought the first shot was high (it was a bit), figured it was spined so he put another into it. Turns out the second shot was a waste. Both lungs were ventilated, the tremendous energy from the foster slug must have short circuited his back-end? Either that or seeing it was his first EVER biggame kill he might have gotten a little soft watching something die.

Here's one of the loads taken across the lake to camp. The price you pay for privacy I guess.

...And lets not forget the best thing about bear hunting is the fishing :D.

Super story Caboose

We are starting the fall season with the guns up in northern Ab tomorrow.

Allow me to wax poetic for a moment….

Nice bear? Yeah….not too bad. We guessed at maybe 275lbs. One shot with iron sights from about 80yards. I was on the ground concealed by a beaver dam. He came from my right, between the bait and myself. Forty yards away….barely heard a thing. My Scent-Lok clothing must be working because the wind is swirling a bit. The suns at my back which is a big advantage. I watched for maybe 10 minutes, trying to decide if he was a good shooter or not. He was getting ready to leave without hitting the barrel. Starting to question the Scent-Lok and swirling winds…..or is a larger boar around? It was around 20:00, maybe 45 minutes of shooting light left? The bear looked good enough to me and was on his way out. I carefully line up my sights and….BANG! Dashing maybe twenty yards into the bush, I still have that visual picture of where he ran in. I knew I hit him good, confirmed by four death moans over a 10 second period. My shot was a nearly perfect quartering away one, exiting his left elbow area. The bullet impact was a bit high so the heart was saved for a delicious stir fry. Both lungs were completely destroyed, a quick clean kill. The “Winchester CXP2” 300gr JHP bullet from my .45/70 lever action Marlin rifle did fragment some. No bullet pieces were recovered.

Poured it on a little thick there…..lol.

Not up to Grizzly standards but still not something you want to tangle with...

First of all, I have no pics, period, however my buddy and I shot one a few days after the season opened with his his 1895 guide gun with my 350 Hornady reloads with the 47 grains of RL-7.
We did have a drive over scale we used fron he local mill. It was 260 kilos or 575 lbs. before dressing him out. Go figure, this is the year I get a moose tag and we have a passle full on deer tags fro WMU 10 to boot!

Geez I am gonna need a bigger deep freeze, and lotsa pepperettes!!!

Ricky

Thanks guys! WMU42 doesn't offer many Moose tags (our last was 91') so I gave up on that an picked up Bear hunting. I'm totally hooked now, can't get enough of seeing them. They can be very stealthy, disappearing in every shadow. You haven't seen the colour black till your up close to a Black Bear .

Caboose, these are the Interlock Flatnose. The leverevolution ones are 325's, and I am not sure if they are out yet for reloading. Never been able to recover any of the bullets yet, although he did quite the back flip!
