Although my buddy and I will ultimately decide for ourselves, I thought I'd ask what other people would do given the choice.
There will be at least two of us hunting moose in Ontario this fall. Up to 4 but skeptical on two of my friends.
Buddy drew a cow/calf archery tag and I drew calf "bows only and gun seasons" tag near Sudbury. We both have unused bear tags from our spring bear hunt and there are bears in the area we will be hunting. We would prefer not to "burn" both his and my points this year so we plan on only taking one of the two tags. As per the regulations we can only carry firearms that match our type of tags, so if we are archery moose hunting we cannot carry a rifle for bear.
This will be our 4th year moose hunting but the first in this area (but we have hunted bears in this area for ~10 years). Our first year moose hunting we harvested a cow in NW Ontario but the last two years we have seen nothing and very little sign so figure an 8 hour drive (from Windsor ON) better than a 26 hour drive to see nothing.
I'm leaning towards a "gun" calf hunt, as the odds of seeing a bear is probably greater than the odds of seeing a calf moose, and I'd rather have a rifle for bear vs my crossbow.
What would y'all do under these circumstances?
Thanks!
