Hi all, took a read through the 2009-10 Ontario hunting regs and didn't see anything about rifle caliber / bullet type restrictions on the different type of game, only if centrefire rifle was allowed or not.

Could you hunt moose with a .223 FMJ? I know you wouldn't, but are there any regs regarding this?

Cheers

FMJ's can be used for hunting, I haven't seen anywhere in the regs which prohibits this.

Centerfire rifle cannot be used on big game in southwestern Ontario and certain other WMUs, but i think the regs are different where you are.

The only moose restriction I know of is no rimfire. But I don't hunt moose, and certainly not up north, so, hopefully someone else can chime in

Hope you got your flame suit on!!

You cant hunt with FMJ..... This is very basic hunter ed s**t that should have been covered in the opening sentance of your course.
As for moose, check page 22 of the book for what firearms can be LEGALY used. (http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/239841.pdf) .223 would be ok as far as law goes, not a good idea IMO but as far as the law goes you'd be fine

edit to say,2,700+ posts and been here over a year and you came out with that, s**t man you gotta talk less and read more I think

This is what I've always understood, but I don't see it anywhere in the hunting regs?? Trying to figure out where it is prescribed by law.

There is nothing in the Ontario F&W Act that says FMJ can't be used. It may be a hunter ed thing (and common sense), but it is not the law. If you can provide a reference to the legislation I would be happy to be proven wrong.

The only regs governing bullet type (In Ont) would be in the Criminal Code under prohib ammo

I always thought that you couldn't hunt in Ontario with FMJ (not that I would anyways), but Kenny G2 is right, I downloaded the '09-10 regs and searched for FMJ and it's not there.

If for some reason you want to hunt with FMJ :)confused:) and you want to be sure, call the MNR.

Remember, the regs are just a summary. If you want the real source you have to go to the Legislation. Ontario's Fish and Wildlife Act is worth reading if you hunt.

What the MNR should do is have a FAQ on the website. I'm sure they get the same questions over and over.

Guys I hunt with are always pulling some new regulation out of their a$$ but can't back it up in the regs.

I remeber a debate on this last fall that went into detail. I THINK the info your looking for can be found there, I'd look for it myself, but I gotta leave for work in 12min.

caliber restrictions are king of scattered throughout the regulations. There is a centerfire caliber restriction below .270 in parts of southern ontario but it only applies to small game. many zones only allow shotgun or muzzleloader fro big game - usually for deer seasons in semi built up areas.

Turkey hunting you're restricted to #4,5,or 6 shot and 20 or 12 gauge ( not sure about 10 gauge). Also I beleive you can't hunt with anything bigger than 10 gauge

not sure but i thought you couldn't hunt small game with slugs. To prevent grouse hunters from poaching moose or deer I guess
