Just came across this thread today so sorry for the late post. Yes the Ontario MNR has released two in my location, my neighbour and I saw them do it. They say it is to help control the deer population so they are real in Southern Ontario. Check this site out. http://www.ontariopuma.ca/

Now they say there have been some Sasquatch sightings in Ontario as well, this I find harder to believe but hey you never know.
 
My wife and I saw one cross hwy 37 south of Tweed 3 years ago. We saw it from about 200m away, but it was unmistakeably a cougar.

I'd like to shake hands with the man who can live trap a Sasquatch for release in another province.

Question? Would Vital Statistics want to see the Sasquatch's birth certificate before he could take up residence in Ontario?

How many and what size would you like?? We've got more than enough in Alberta. How be we share some with you guys??

About two weeks ago, there was a cougar sighting in Cobalt, by one of the locals.
Word gets around and everybody wants "to believe" and it becomes a "fact".
And I don't believe too much of what I read on the internet.

Okay, so how about this little internet blurb. I think it is a little more believable here. They are very elusive and there are very few numbers of them. The Ontario MNR is not denying there existence. Have a read.

It’s a question Ministry of Natural Resources staff are often asked. After all, the last known cougar in the province was shot way back in 1884. There’s never been a definitive photo taken of a cougar in Ontario.

How do you prove cougars live in Ontario? For the last five years, ministry researchers have been looking for evidence. With the public’s help, they have documented cougar tracks. They’ve found scat (feces) which has tested positive for cougar DNA. And they’ve seen evidence of cougars in the distinctive way other animals are killed.



“In those five years, we’ve only collected about 30 pieces of evidence from the far northwest of the province to the south,” says ministry senior research scientist Rick Rosatte. “So while we know there are cougars in the province, we also know they are extremely rare.”

There are cougars in Ontario and there are cougars in New Brunswick. I came across a black one in New Brunswick in 1975, within six feet of it. It was on the shoulder of a highway near Stanley, N.B., 10 O'clock P.M. My headlights picked it up and it didn't move off until I was within 6 feet of it. By then, I was almost stopped. I inquired with a local guide and he said the locals called them "devil cats". It turns out that they were a black phase cougar. A few years later, my oldest son saw a black one in broad daylight about 15 miles from my sighting. It too was crossing a highway and at first he thought it was a black bear, but as he came much closer he realized it was a big, big black cat (cougar).

The MNR of N.B. denied their presence for many years (like Ontario), but finally they conceded their presence and sent out a request to residents (and others) for reports. It'll be at least 25 years since they officially recognized their presence in their province. My avatar is of the Province of New Brunswick because I was born and educated there.

In 2006 I was baiting bear on a private property here in Ont. The property was owned by a professor of wildlife biology. In private conversation he vociferously denied the presence of cougar in Ont. He said "They couldn't survive the winters here". I told him that I'd seen their tracks in the snow in March in the Haliburton area and that New Brunswick had them in the central region and their winters were at least as bad, if not worse, that central Ontario. His friend and mine was a CO taught by him, who also denied their presence. My friend, now retired, now admits their presence, and the old prof...? Well, let's just say he doesn't now recognize his friend and former student, or maybe what province he's in. :rolleyes:

not the first sighting in that area, keep in mind not all sightings are reported to the MNR. Kaladar area was all buzzed about it a few years back. I hear about "big cat like tracks" all the time but not to many solid sightings.

We have that same problem with cougar reintroduction pics in Alberta.

Cougars seem to be able to render modern electronic devices inoperable.

The whole "MNR releasing" is what got me, its been hashed out on here many times :bsFlag:
The MNR has released that there are cougars in Ont, that is enough for me to believe they are here, but to say they released them here is nonsense IMO
 
All this talk about the elusive cougar.. What about big foot? Anymore see him yet? There was a thing on discovery channel the other day and a bunch of people were in the mountains in Vancouver at night with sensitive microphones. Apparently witnesses have heard him roaring at night and it was the scariest and loudest thing they have ever heard lmao. So a crew of people spent days in different locations in the mountains but didn’t hear anything.

If you see a cougar while you’re hunting and shot it can you be charged?

As Pyd said, only justifiable reason is for self-defense.

Ministry reclassified them as endangered instead of extinct in the province a few years ago (refer to The Endangered Species Act 2007).

Oh and there's this gem on the MNR website about cougars..

If you believe your personal safety is somehow threatened contact the local police services or call 911 immediately.

A) Endangered (and protected)
B) They want you to call for help if you're in danger

Knowing how stuff works around here, even if you were attacked they'll probably still try to pull you through our legal system.

UH not really, this is the government and they have been known to lie about things the odd time.
