Is crown land really that bad (e.g getting shot at, theft, vandalism of vehicles, etc) ? I am more interested in Ontario, but other areas can chip in

There are quite a few posts recalling bad incidents, but the incidents may be spaced out by years, hard to say.

I really want some more time for deer hunting as the days I go out with a friend on private property are limited. So i was thinking, maybe drive an hour half to the crown land and try my luck there. Anyone been on crown land in the South eastern areas of Ontario? How as it been?

I hunt crown land in central Ontario and it's not that bad as far as conflicts go. There are other hunters, most encounters are respectful. I've lost one camera and a few SD cards. I've had some run-ins with a**holes but they're few and far between.

Very quiet out this year, very few shots and I don't think I've heard a hound all week.

I think where in Ontario you go plays a big factor. I was just up there and while I did notice more people than usual, it wasn't unhuntable.

I did have a few run ins with knuckleheads but it wasn't anything malicious. Lots of quads flying around, not until 7:30-8am though.

thanks for the input. I guess I wont know until I go out and try.

Do you guys just park your car on the side of the road?

By all means! Thats what CL is for, you to enjoy, Park as out of the way as possible, usually there are spots wear you can get right over and well out of the way, (rock outcrops, old skidder push outs) think about the traffic passing as if your on a hill/corner best to move to a stretch that won't cause a possible collision. (Happens usually here by people looking at leaves) Also don't block access to ATV / trails etc, I've been pulling medical calls out, gotten to the mouth of a trail and not been able to get the casualty to the Ambulance without added pain by people blocking access points parked awkwardly, if your considerate to others, your day will be that much more enjoyable, my humble 2 cents, good luck and be safe!

Lots of Crown land east of Bancroft. The deer hunting isn't amazing though, population is way down last few years. So much so that there isn't a lot of hunters out right now.

As far as getting stuff stolen or running into dicks, you'll be fine. Never had my quad or trucks messed with and every hunter I run into that I don't know have been fine.

I hunt south of Denbigh.

Ah thanks for the heads up.

I wasnt expecting much of the area since it's like the most southern crown land so probably lots of people go there. But I guess it's still a better chance than not going out at all

I live in the Bancroft area, there is lots of crown land. In particular, there are some large patches of crown land that are not heavily hunted. However, just bear in mind that some crown land has hunt camps on it from the old days, and infringing upon their territory would be considered poor judgement.
The deer population is another matter. Between the two bad winters we had a few years ago, and the moratorium on wolf/coyote hunting, the deer population has been hit very hard. I was told by one of the local biologists that the population has not been this low since the crash that occurred in the late 50's. My own experience this year reflects this, and we are hunting hard with hounds in an area of several thousand acres - nothing hanging yet.

Go on Facebook ontario deer hunters page. Seen some hilarious videos from this year crown land hunting.

Video #1 middle aged man yelling at another hunter in the ground blind that he can't hunt there as its his spot. Goes on for about 6mins of yelling before guy just turns around and stands in front of the blind.

Video #2 Guy is filming from his blind as some random hunter is taking a s#!+ about 20 yards in front of his blind in the middle of the bush.

Lots of guys crying about others walking past their stand. I hunt a bit of crown myself, Way off the beaten path and have yet to run into anyone else.

You going back out again this week?

I was up there last week. It was very quiet with not much shooting.

Video 1 sounds ridiculous a d the second is pretty funny. Lots of post of deer with weird antler angles too.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Are people trying to take out the coyotes around there?

Had my first run in with vandals this season in 5 years of deer hunting Saugeen Conservations. Buggers checking the locks on parked cars then doing doughnuts in the parking lot spraying vehicles with stones and mud. My hunting partner had a first hand view of the action from his stand. Beware a dark sedan with an extremely loud muffler in the Durham region.

Still, I've only had that one incident in 5 years of steady roadside parking. No worse then the city or suburbs IMHO.

You cannot hunt wolf or coyotes in or around Algonquin Park. The exclusion zone goes as far south as Apsley. I saw two full size wolves earlier in the week while on watch near Apsley. Normally, the sightings of wolves/coyotes are a fairly rare occurrance - not so these days...
