I'm going to apply for my deer tags.
So once i've entered the draw........then what?

This will be my first deer season. How will they contact me? How long will it take?
etc etc etc

ANY info you can give me would be great.

Thanks

You have to buy a license over the phone(preferred),if you want to be in a controlled hunt you will have to register on the phone for the area and time and fire arms season you wish to hunt in (after August 1st I believe). The draw you are in with the purchase of your license is for a doe tag draw in the wmu you put in for.You can use this for bow hunting, or in the general fire arms season which is mostly in the north, but it will only be valid for a doe in the wmu you put in for so you will be buck hunting outside the wmu you put in for.If you put in for a controlled hunt you will get a special tag for that season. All this is in the hunting regulations read it to be sure I am correct.

Orrrr...you can do like I did when I lived in Hamilton as a displaced NB'er back in the 90's for few years.
hmmm,,let's see....apply for 5 day shotgun season and not get drawn....orrr,90 day bow season,Sundays included.Guess I'll take up bowhunting? No regrets.

In order to get an actual deer licence, it must be done over the phone? They aren't very clear in the 'White-tailed Deer Regulations' of the 2008 Hunting Regulations. It talks about the draw for an antlerless and the controlled hunt.

It also talks about purchasing additional tags, something that I am interested in. Here is a line from the regulations:

'NOTE: An additional game seal for deer is NOT a deer
licence. An additional game seal for deer is valid only if
the hunter possesses a current deer licence.'

What do we need to do to get the 'current deer licence'? Sorry, this must seem like an obvious question. My 'Hunting Outdoors Card' is supposed to come in the mail by July 23rd or so.

Go to your local sporting goods store and get a copy of the hunting regulations. Under general and under deer, it will have all the info you need. (including the 1-800 number). Or check out this link

Edit to add

Let's start from the top.

First get your outdoors card (hunting version)

Now, depending on where you live/hunt you are either in a controlled hunt area (SW Ont) or a non-controlled aka regular area.

If you hunt in a controlled hunt area, you must call the 1-800 # (or submit by paper (mail)--which you can get from a Service Ontario centre) and apply to be in the controlled hunt. This has to be in by Sept 02 2008. When you do it over the phone; you are not buying a license, you are just entering the draw. If you get chosen to hunt, you will get a validation card in the mail and you need to go to the local licensing place (ie sporting goods store or MNR office) and buy your license (aka tag). So When you hunt, you need to carry the validation card, your outdoors card and the "tag"/game seal.Remember only enter the draw once, by phone OR paper NOT both

If you are in a regular area (non-controlled hunt), you can do one of three things. (1) Call the 1-800# and buy your "buck" tag and enter into the antlerless draw. This has to be done by July 31 2008. OR (2)Go to your local licensing place and buy a "buck" tag. Included in this tag is a form, which you can send into the MNR to get entered into the antlerless draw. Make sure you are entered by July 31, 2008. Again Only enter the draw once, DO NOT do it by phone and paper. Option (3). Buy your "buck" tag and do not enter the draw, it will only allow you to hunt antlered deer.

As to additional game seals. I believe what they are trying to say is; You must have a current seal/tag, before you can apply or buy a second one.

Thank you trublu =) that was very helpful.

How do I discover where my local licencing place is? I am in the Ottawa area. Is it just the local service centre? How do we find out the licenced locations?

On the back of the Hunting regulations book, there is a listing of the Service Ontario and MNR offices and what they offer.

To purchase a license, Most sporting goods (that sell fishing and hunting stuff) will sell licenses. In my area, Canadian Tire, Wal-Mart sell them. In Ottawa, Le Baron sells them too.

Here is a link to the Service Ontario centres (on the right hand side you can search for your local office)

most Crappytire stores here sell deer tags as do most gun stores or any Service Ontario Centers or as others have stated by phone

Thanks for all the info
And to think most of my hardships were due to a service Ontario kiosk

In April I did all the paper work and stuff for my hunting license.
But for some reason when I tried to apply for the deer draw on the phone it wouldn't let me.
I called the MNR, and they told me i only had a fishing license.
After being transfered a few times and reading off every set of numbers there was on my paper copy.
It was determined that my license hadn't even been processed.
So the person at the other end told me they were going to make a few calls and by the evening i would be able to apply for my tags.

At least things got resolved.

Point of this story?.......
Don't leave things to long or you might not be able to shoot a deer.

Chances are I won't get one anyways, but i deserve as much of a chance as the next guy.

As Crowca suggested, buy your license and enter the draw by phone.
Make sure you have your all your info and a credit card handy when you call.
At one time, some folks paper applications went astray somewhere between the mailbox and the MNR office.
Our group now does all our entries for the moose draw etc by phone.

The number is 1-800-288-1155. Have your visa, mastercard or american express card numer at hand, as well as your outdoors card number and the WMU number you wish to hunt in. Draw deadline is july 31/08 at midnight. O.K. you've already done that. your tag and the sticker will be mailed to you in august, telling you on your tag whether you were successful or not. You can also call this number and give your outdoors card number in early august and the recorded message will tell you if you were successful. The peel off sticker that comes in the mail ,with your tag, goes on the back of your outdoors card. The tag or game seel goes in your pocket, when you are hunting. Enjoy!! Sorry if all this sounds stupid.

i am new to this and the other day i went in to the local gun shop and purchased a deer license he then gave me a green tag and the sticker for my outdoors card and he filled out a piece of white paper with my outdoors card # on it and the wmu i wished to hunt in. my qustion being i am i now in the anterless draw he kept the paper and i have the tag. does the doe tag know just come in the mail as in my wmu is 100% and attach to the box on the green seal or what? also when and how do i apply for my bow tag and see if there is any other extra seals i can get?

generally you also pick up the regs and read them. Doe apps are usually mailed in by you.

Your license is your bow license.

Check yur regs for WMU with extra tags

I'm feeling generous, so here is the online version

Thanks for all the info everyone so one more question
Did all the good stuff over the phone... however when i was asked for the WMU i want to hunt in it asked for the 2 digit number But the wmu i want is a 2 digit number with a letter, so what now, do i get to hunt in both a and b?

EI ya ya

If there were letters for the option then they would have asked you for them.

please read the regs, there is a worksheet in there

clik linkabove and scrol down to page 56

so i figured it all out
I'm an idiot
I applied to the antlerless deer draw. I didn't know it was bow only.

Oh well, I talked to the MNR and at least this way i got my deer license.
This whole hunting thing really is a learning curve.
I just want some yummy wild game that i shot myself.

Maybe I'll go buy a bow.......... double my hunting time

89a or 89b

89b I guess. Read the regs and keep an eye out for when yu can apply for the shotgun hunt. If you do it properly they will ask you for "a" or "b".

the license you bought is good for the shotgun hunt if you enter and are chosen

JIC; your tag is good for an antlered deer during any rifle or bow season, the draw is for antlerless. Shotgun is a seprate draw
