It is not just about how many deer I shoot .we party hunt with bows and guns so I can shot as many as we have tags for.i am just starting a conversation on the system and how it could be changed to separate bowl tags from gin tags.some people never put know up a bow in there life. Yes I shot three deer this year and had a great season hunting with family and friends.

I think it would be great to have a tag for bow and one for gun. I usually tag out in bow and I am grateful for that. I do agree that the rest of the season sucks. My biggest pet peeve is that there are too many poachers in area 59 and eventually they will destroy deer populations for your legal hunters. Some hunters have no conscience and have had their freezers over full with deer that should have been still alive and reproducing. No body ever squeals on them because the are friends of friends or relatives etc. Just my little rant. Thanks, and Merry Christmas to all the gun nutters.
I'll take a bowl of gin, but prefer a bottle.

Not sure if I agree on the bow tag and then gun tags. But I do think Ontario needs to come up with a better ungulate program and manage its resource better. Here in southern Ontario I'd like to see some better sort of buck management plan. Some way to allow some younger bucks to survive and provide a quality deer hunting experience. Bring the buck to doe ratio into line. I kinda wish we'd move the first gun season during the rut back.... maybe a 2 week season in Dec. allow some bucks make it through the rut. Not sure if these are viable suggestions just some thoughts.

Personally just being out there trying to get a deer is a quality deer hunting experience in itself, shooting a deer is a big bonus, shooting one with really big antlers is like....... icing on the cake.
There are a lot of great bucks in southern Ontario. I seen three this fall that would pass 160 inch.and know of several shot that are over 160 this year .you just got to find them.there is so much land and Bush that never see a hunter private and park land as well as land in city limits that hold great bucks
Not being silly... never heard of an archery specific doe tag... all of our Northern units are a general doe tag for any season, archery, rifle or muzzleloader... same tag. The tags are issued for the WMU with no designation for a specific season.
We have them down here, they can come in the form of an additional deer seal archery only(it may be labelled for buck, doe or either depending on what they want managed) specific to archery only.

No harm there Hoyt I had never heard of it either until I moved to Southwestern Ontario. But that's how they do it down here.
No such thing as a doe tag either.....it's and antlerless tag! Haha now I'm a douch!

Hi Frank I agree with heard management, but part of heard mangement are good mangement practices things like QDMA, Hunters for the hungery programs in zones wth to many deer or earn a buck programs in urban zones, youth seasons for new hunter recruitment, etc....provide the current and new hunting populations with quality hunting opportunities (maybe experiences was the wrong word?) I agree just getting out to hunt is the experience.
It's not just about the heard either habitat has to be at the forefront its good for both hunters and non hunters.
Here in Southwestern Ontario my synical thought is that they manage for lesser car/deer collisions not necessarily the heard.

I cannot fathom what made you decide to start this thread. I mean, taking three deer in a season probably puts you in the top 2% of hunters this year as far as success rates go. And besides, you answered your question right there in your op anyway. Just party hunt! And if you really need a 4th deer next year, get the wives their licenses and have them buy tags galore.
Contact the MNR they were supplied three digital copies with sworn affidavits but I guess that wasn't enough to proceed. The excuse used was we had a senior member quit so we were all filling in for him. Guess government HR is as incompetent as the minions.
Being I usually sit at the defence table I would have told someone confronted with this evidence to think about a deal but hey that's why I don't work for the Crown. I still have some scruples and morals left and that instilled sense of right and wrong always gets in the way. In Ontario Provincial Offence courts if they are not making money(fines) prosecution is slim cause it is all about money for Wynne and the municipalities share.

It is not about how many deer I shot it is about the system.we have to put in for a draw to hunt does with archery so why not have a separate tag for archery. Keep it separately from gun tags.thats all. Just starting a discussion. I I know more then a few guys that shot more then a few deer a season.not a big deal if you live in farm country and have access to lots of farms to hunt.
I only have one tag and I bow, rifle and shotgun hunt. Hunt 3 different WMUS as well.
I only had a buck tag so I passed on a lot of deer with the bow and like the gun hunt. I gun hunt with two gangs (one for shotgun, then different for rifle). Ended up shooting a nice 8 point on the last night of the shotgun hunt so put my buddy's tag on it that doesn't bow hunt.
Passed on a few deer with the rifle opening morning but could have shot 4 as we had the tags. Other guys filled them later in the week
So I still have my buck tag and can bow hunt but my freezer is already full so I won't try to fill it.
I don't mind how the system is run, actually wish they would cut tags back since deer numbers are way lower than they were 10years ago.
Maybe earn a deer tag by shooting a coyote or wolf lol

Or for every yote tail turned in, they could give a box of that fancy lead-free ammo they're so keen on.
If the province wants each hunter to shoot only one deer (never mind for the moment whether that is a sound idea...) why on earth would they do what you are asking? This would mean one of two things: either they would be issuing far more tags (if everyone gets to apply for two, and those who win the lottery buy both) OR they determine to keep the number of tags the same, which would result in lots of guys not getting even one.
I get it; when I lived in Onterrible, I enjoyed taking a doe early in the season, usually by bow, and then having the rest of the season (bow/shotgun/muzzleloader) to look for a nice buck. Many years I never shot a second deer, although I had a tag to do so.
But deer numbers are down, and the powers-that-be have decreed that everybody gets only one deer tag. So...suck it up. If you want to hunt all season long, then don't shoot the first legal deer you see. Hunt and enjoy it.
In 2014, in Manitoba, I had one buck-only tag. I passed on the same little buck several times and ended up with nothing...the first year in a long, long time that I didn't get a deer. My choice, however, and I didn't think of griping about it. Our numbers were also down, and even if I could have legally taken a doe I wouldn't have done it.

If you get a gun tag and a bow tag that gives you two deer instead was of the one you get with the combined tag..... that's simple math...... the population won't support it....... and we would be right back to where we were before......
