ontario draws out and so am i

OP, I hear you, we didn’t get a tag either with one of our gang with 7 points and the others with a bit less. We did pick an area with our best chance of getting a tag but still no luck.

We were masters of the old system though only getting skunked once in many years. We do have a large group of hunters which helps.

What’s really weird is some of us with low points went into the 2nd draw with choice 2 and 3 for area 21a where they’re giving away tags and no luck there either. Those are supposed to be random draws and they are obviously holding back tags for this random draw.

Can't be that bad, I've drawn antlerless Mulie every year that I've applied in both SK(when I lived there) and AB (where I currently live) and this year my wife and I both drew antlered and antlerless Mulie and last year she drew antlerless moose with a priority 1! I haven't drawn Moose, Elk or Antelope yet as I have been applying to WMZ 999 to build priority for when I have time to go after them.

In Ontario where there’s moose the deer population is typically low. Once you get into the southern edge of moose areas you start seeing more deer with many areas in southern Ontario having 100% success for antlerless deer draws. Here in southern Ontario I usually see more deer in one day than an entire group of moose/deer hunters see up north in a whole week.

As for the OP and his group not getting moose tags, something doesn’t sound right.

Something just doesn't sound right. Either you're not getting the whole story or somebody is trying to wind you up.

I agree. Don't have all the information. Is the other group applying for bow tags? Or were they successful with first allocation, first choice and maybe yours was 2nd choice? Some things will affect the results. If they had 5 points in first allocation and picked unit 54 with their first choice, and you had 15 points and picked unit 54 with your 2nd choice, there's a chance they would draw a tag before you. But without all the info its hard to say.

I put one of our low point(0) guys in for calf in the primary allocation 1st choice, no tag. Same guy drew one in the secondary allocation and another guy got one as well in the random draw. Crazy stuff can happen.

Tons of #####ing and moaning on Facebook groups too. Most stories don’t make any sense. Lots of facts being left out or straight up lying in most cases. I’m a much bigger fan of the new system than the old one. Saw the same massive families getting moose tags my entire life with the same 4-6 uncles actually doing the hunting. Under the old system I would have died and never seen a tag for my wmu. At least with the new system I can expect to see 2-3 tags in my lifetime for my wmu, if I choose to wait. If I do get those tags there won’t be calf hunting groups parked every half mile down logging roads. Or I can choose to travel way the hell up north where less points are required, like we did last year. Even with a modest size group, if a group plans it out and hunts the crappy wmu’s they should see at least a tag per season if they rotate.

Feel bad to some degree for the mostly old timer camps that might not see another tag in their lifetime and had long running family and/or friend traditions of calf hunting. My advice has been to continue, just with bear or bird hunting. Most people I’ve said that to haven’t taken it kindly.
