Ontario Elk Hunt this Fall

25 tag for the first year is ok I think. All the money from the applicants should go towards restoration projects and hopefully in another 10 years they will be everywhere again like turkeys.

Well considering the original plan was when the herd reached 100 animals something like 5 tags would be issued. So I would disagree that 25tags is sufficient. The herd reached 100 animals like 7yrs ago and now we are at nearly 1000 animals and only 25 tags?. I can't see the farmers being happy seeing as there will likely only be a 50% success rate. I think there should be at least 50 tags and preference should be given to land owners and their agents.

I also disagree about wanting Elk everywhere I have 40+/- acres of corn and we loose 3-4 acres to deer now add a healthy population of Elk to the mix and I would likely loose half my crop..........NO THANKS!

The only reason there is an elk season at all is the amount of damage to farmers crops this particular herd has caused. They were released farther away but apparently followed a hydro corridor to this farming area ,found the pickings easy and made themselves to home. MNR won't grant the usual nuicensce animal tags for them and farmers have been at their wits end trying to control the damage. Numerous articles in farming periodicals over the past several years have detailed this problem that has mostly been ignored by MNR and anyone else in a position of authority.

I hunt deer in #61, in old Dungannon Twp, lots of those critters there, you have to be careful when you're deer hunting you don't make the expensive shot.

i hunted deer this past season in WMU 57.. i only hunted for 2 days this year, and saw at least 30 elk (mostly bulls) and 1 whitetail doe..

I've been hunting this same area for the last 12 years or so, and every passing year the deer are getting scarce and the elk are taking over..

don't like my odds of getting a tag.

By the way...There used to be quite a bit of Elk on Ontario in the past....they had suffered just like Turkey and now they are both back.

25 tags...ouch.....Im sure there will be only be a couple thousand applicants !!

I think Ill wait until the heard gets bigger, I think there is another one closer to Sudbury maybe that one will open up for hunting later on.

I figure it will be closer to 10 or 12 thousand applicants.

The Bancroft herd has between 400 and 600, so your 5 tags per 100 is bang on. The other herds will not be hunted, as they have not flourished like this one. I would like to see NO hunt at all right now, and take the extra animals and transplant them with the other herds, to give them a boost.

Blind River I think? This makes me excited! i'm gonna go have a talk with the Elk Project crew at my college and see what they have to say.

It all sounds good until the natives exercise their rights for first dibs and take the cream of the herd just before the opening of the season.

Here's a photo of some of that "wild" elk herd in the Bancroft area. Seems to me it'll be much like shooting cows in a pasture - at least at the outset until they learn they've been tricked. You Bancroft folks would definitely know this fellow -and I don't mean the bull elk. :)

I might know him if his face was not covered.but let me take a guess ( Joe The Elk Man)
And they are all not that tame some will only let you get within 10 feet of them before they wander off.

One of the stupidest things the MNR has done was to release these things.
