The Ontario MNR is proposing changes to the Environmental Registry to allow a Fall Turkey Hunt. They're looking for public input until Mar/08. From what I see, the spring license will not be valid in the fall, need a fall one. Also harvest will be one bird of either ###, bearded or not. As well, no shooting the birds over bait, which may or may not include freshly harvested corn fields in the fall or food plots.

I guess its alright. It wont be the same as the spring though. Turkey's wont answer calls as much in the fall and they are herded up by October. I had flocks of 40-100 turkeys walking less then 20 yards away from me almost everyday while bowhunting deer. Too easy almost, Not my cup of tea.

I'm still in favour of the hunt though, too many turkeys around here. Need to thin them out a bit.

My friend, don't take an out look that this hunt will be easy. I give the Fall hunt 2 seasons and your going to see that hunting turkeys in the fall is not as easy as everyone thinks.

The birds call and answer every bit as spring birds in the fall if they have not been hunted. The excitment level of a fall hunt is every bit as good as the spring but only in a different way and different calls used.

The hardest bird to take in the fall is the gobblers and is a true prize if you do take one. They don't call much and they don't come to the call all that easy. The hunt will average a higher population of hens and young that will become very custom to Fall turkey hunting after being hunted a few times.

The regulation of No hunting over bait is in concern of hunters that bait deer, not corn fields...

This is the part that worries me... Imagine NOT being able to hunt any species "over" or around "anything" that could be constituted as "bait"... A rule change like this would screw up most of the hunting spots I love. No more corn field hunts for ducks and geese, no more sitting on the edge of a field for a deer, etc etc...

Cheers
Jay

That is your opinion, but may not be that of a CO. Some consider food plots to be bait and some don't. If a farmer dumps a small pile of corn in the field, is it considered bait? If not, what's the diff if he dumps it or I do?

One of my treestand location I have used long before we had turkey is in the same area that the turkey now roost. Over the years I could have shot more hens or toms in this area with the bow in the fall than ever in the spring with a gun. They have a larger roosting area in the spring with less birds in the groups, but in the fall there are more birds in a smaller roosting area because of feed. At one time I had 9 toms within 5-10 yards before flying up to roost while I was sitting on the ground against a tree hunting deer with xbow. They will always use same roosting area and since the proposed fall hunt is open until 1/2 hour after sunset the turkey better learn to get smart fast as for now they are one stupid bird that can be patterned like any other animal. Most corn/bean fields are ploughed under in our area making the turkey hunt easier in the fall. I will not hunt then in the fall as I hunt moose, deer and waterfowl. I only hope the MNR will have a earlier cut off time in the evening so hunters are not in roosting area when it is time for the turkey to roost. A turkey is only as smart as you make him.

Great...Just great! More tresspassers chassing birds through my archery locations....sure taking a bird in the fall would be nice come christmas dinner. But with fellas with bows out after deer in full camo and fellas out after birds in full camo....I don't see this being a good mix. And if the MNR plans on shuting down the archery season to ACCOMODATE the fall turkey hunt....piss on them.

You have rabbit hunters, bird hunters, deer archery, duck, goose, varmint, tons of hunters in the bush buring the fall and nowhere does it state that you have to have hunter orange unless there is a gun hunt for deer or moose/ The whole idea that people in camo hunting different things is unsafe, wake up, it is no different than it is now. Make sure of your target and what is beyond it.

I am up for this hunt, would make for a great day out, changing things up once in the fall.

Thats not my opinion, thats what the MNR told me yesterday. If they find a corn feild with a fresh scatter of corn across an area, your getting it plain and simple, because No one is stupid Corn feilds don't have fresh corn in them in spring. There is a grey area in this and they know that.

O something else I don't type something I don't know...

Chilly, Not to worry. The season is going to be the 3-4th week of October, If you think about it most people moose hunt and will be gone. That takes out the highest percentage of hunters. A large number are waterfowlers as well.
I'm sure you will see a Regulation like PA where a Turkey hunter needs to ware Orange when moving.

I've hunted PA that has way more hunters then us and have yet to run into a deer hunter when turkey hunting their in the fall. What is real neat is that in the morning you can go get a fall turkey and the afternoon be in your stand and kill a buck on the same day. I have done that in PA...

Great, hunt turkeys while I'm off hunting moose. I've not seen a turkey in the moose woods yet. Well, except for the wingless variety. :)
The fall turkey hunt won't bother me, but I won't get to participate in it either. Bad timing.
